Sarah Friar, (born December 24, 1977) is an Irish-American[2] business executive who has been the CEO of Nextdoor Social Networking Service since December, 2018.[3] Prior to her appointment as CEO of Nextdoor, Sarah was the CFO of Square, Inc.[4]

Early life[edit]

Sarah Friar was born in Sion Mills, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, to Irish parents. Her father was an HR manager, while her mother was a district nurse. Friar was offered a scholarship by the accounting company, Arthur Andersen. She used the scholarship to achieve her M.Eng in Economics, management and Metallurgy in 1996 at Oxford University.[5]

Education[edit]

Friar graduated from the University of Oxford in 1996, where she obtained a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Economics, Management and Metallurgical engineering. She then attended Stanford Graduate School of Business, receiving her Masters in Business Administration degree in 2000.[6]

Career[edit]

Friar worked as a business analyst at McKinsey in the United Kingdom and South Africa. After her time at Mckinsey, Friar joined Goldman Sachs, where she worked as an equity analyst in San Francisco. Friar also spent a brief time at Salesforce.[7]

Friar joined Square, Inc. in 2012. She was appointed to the position of Chief Financial Officer at Square, an American financial services, merchant services aggregator, and mobile payment company based in San Francisco, California.[8] During her time at Square, Sarah launched its initial public offering (IPO), in 2015 where the company added $30Bn in market capital[9]

Friar is currently the Chief Executive Officer at Nextdoor[10] She joined Nextdoor in December, 2018[11][12]

Awards and honours[edit]

Friar was listed as 84th on Forbes America's Self-Made Women list in 2020.[13]

Friar is a board member at Dragoneer Growth Opportunities Corp. She is member, Aspen Global Leadership Network and a Fellow, Inaugural Class of the Finance Leaders Fellowship Program.[11]

Personal life[edit]

Sarah Friar is married to David K. Riley and they have two children.[4]
