Talia Ray had grown up in New Jersey, and organized their housing situation to be put in Slonim Woods, a building on the Sarah Lawrence campus. In her sophomore year (September 2010), Talia informed her housemates that Larry would stay after getting out of prison. Larry told the housemates stories about him being an operative for the CIA and "preach[ing] the values of the Marine Corps." Their roommates, Daniel Barban Levin, Juli Anna, Claudio, Santos, and Isabella (Talia's best friend). Larry begun to council the roommates on self-discipline. Isabella, 19, had recently broken up with her boyfriend, and confided in Larry. Larry began to sleep in her room, which made Talia's at-the-time boyfriend uncomfortable. In December, Larry told Isabella's mother about Isabella being sexually abused, and blamed it on the mother. Rather than returning home, Isabella spent their winter break in New York City in a one-bedroom condominium along with Talia, Larry, and Talia's boyfriend. In the apartment, Talia and her boyfriend slept in the living room, while Larry and Isabella shared the bedroom. Talia's boyfriend alleges Larry "controlled every aspect of our lives once we were in the apartment... When we ate, what we did, when we went to bed," and even pressured him to stop his antipsychotic medication. After the break ended, the boyfriend broke up with Talia.
Larry returned to living in Slonim Woods 6, and slept most nights in Isabella's room. Larry gathered the house one night to lecture about a friend's, David Birnbaum, philosophy entitled Quest For Potential (Q4P). Claudia, who had originally been unnerved by Larry, began to take weekly "counseling sessions" of his after becoming interested in the topic. Claudia began sharing a diagnosis of schizophrenia, one which Larry diagnosed despite a lack of a license. At the end of the school year in 2011, Daniel felt his relationship with his girlfriend was deteriorating, and was urged to talk with Larry by Santos and Claudia. During this talk, Larry suggested he dump his girlfriend, and reassured him that he was not gay. Feeling validated by Larry, and with nowhere to live for the summer, Daniel lived in the apartment they had lived the previous winter with his roommates Talia, Claudia, Isabella, and Santos.
Larry worked as a consultant to a wealthy friend, and built a domain name registrar using the students' help.
During the summer, Larry's mission was to "personally guide the young adults...through the teenage wasteland." During the summer, they ate meals and watched movies together. Occasionally, Larry would occasionally buy expensive clothing or footwear, and take them out to expensive dinners. Frequently, Larry would hold discussions at night around and interrogated a single person, typically for behaving in a way he didn't like or making mistakes, in order to reveal deep truths about themselves. He attributed mistakes and wrongdoing to childhood trauma. Once, Larry had convinced Daniel that the reason why he played guitar was because of his father inflicting trauma on him. Larry pressured the students to find meaning or explanation to their actions for the interrogation to end, even if the underlying reason was entirely fictional.
Claudia began to adopt Larry's exercise routine and eating habits, becoming fixated on losing weight and being increasingly dissatisfied with appearance. Claudia's parents, who became suspicious of Larry, met with Allen Green, the school's dean of student life, who informed them of other complaints of Larry, but did not take any action. The school denied knowledge to New York magazine of Larry living on campus. Claudia became critical of her parents, being disparaging to how they ran their household.
