History and Architecture

Sarona Market is located in the southern edge of the Templer Colony, between Ha'arba'a Street and Kaplan Street. The colony of Sarona was built in 1871 (19th century) by a Templer delegation from Germany who wished to express their innovative ideas in the field of agriculture and construction. With the British occupation of the Land of Israel, the British Mandate settled in the Colony and built new houses within the complex, which somewhat changed its rural character. In 1947, the colony was transferred from the British to the Jews and served as the official and first base of the Haganah. At the same time and due to the siege of Jerusalem, the buildings in Sarona served the government ministries until 1955, when they moved to Jerusalem.

In 2006, the Israeli government decided to preserve and restore 36 houses in Sarona - five of which were transferred in an elaborate and special work to the Sarona compound. Sarona Market was designed by architects Kika Braz, Uri Ben Dror and Michael Ankawa from Studio Mo. culinary guidance and counseling is provided by Yaron Kastenbaum. As of 2018, Efrat Anzel is the culinary consultant who helps create unique culinary content.
