Sashi Zaifi (Tajik: Саши Заифӣ) (born December 13, 1974) is a Tajik singer, songwriter and bard of Pamiri origin.

Biography[edit]

Sashi Zaifi, born as Shirinsho Kosumshoevich Masumov (Tajik: Шириншо Қосумшоевич Масумов), is a Pamiri poet, composer, musician, and bard. He was born on December 13, 1974, in the Murghab district of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region of Tajikistan. According to his own words, he is named after his paternal grandfather Shirinsho Shotemur, a prominent early 20th-century Tajik political leader of Pamiri origin, who was repressed during the Great Terror.

Sashi Zaifi has recorded more than 20 albums of Pamiri and Russian songs of his own composition. He writes his songs in Tajik, Russian and Shughnani languages. Zaifi is very popular in Badakhshan and also among the Pamiri diaspora communities outside of Tajikistan. He gave concerts in Russia. Zaifi had countrywide tours with concerts in many of the Russian cities, including Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and other major cities[1].[2] His repertoire includes a wide range of themes and styles, ranging from daily life satiric sketches to so-called anthems. The tone and mood of his songs are patriotic, educational, reflective of the social ills, critical of the ruling strata of society, especially political and business elites. Themes such as injustice, nepotism, political corruption and cruelty are widely present in his songs. For this reason, Zaifi has gained immense popularity among his fellow Pamiri people. Most of his songs are in Shughnani language, one of the several Pamiri languages of the region. According to Bomdod News Agency and Pamir Daily News due to increasing pressure and potential threats Zaifi has left Tajikistan and currently taking refuge in one of European countries.[3][4]
