Saudi Founding Day (Arabic: يوم التأسيس السعوديYawm al-Tasis lil-Mamlaka al-ʿArabiyya as-Saʿūdiyya) is celebrated in Saudi Arabia every 22 February to commemorate the Founding of the Saudi State in 1727.

Background[edit]

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, has issued a royal decree considering February 22nd of each year as the anniversary of the founding of the first Saudi state, which marks the beginning of the reign of Imam Muhammad bin Saud in the middle of 1139 AH which was in February 1727 AD.

History[edit]

Founding AlDiriyah[edit]

AlDiriyah was founded by Prince Mani’ bin Rabi’a Al-Muradi in 850 AH / 1446 AD, and he is the twelfth grandfather of King Abdul Aziz bin Abdul Rahman Al Saud, founder of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Prince Mani’ al-Muraydi and his sons and grandsons ruled Diriyah, which became a center of civilization, distinguished by its geographical location in being a crossroads of trade routes between the north and south of the Arabian Peninsula, which contributed to the promotion of trade movement in it and in the neighboring regions.

The first Saudi state[edit]

Imam Muhammad bin Saud established the first Saudi state in 1139 AH / 1727 AD, with its capital in Diriyah, and it continued until 1233 AH. Since the state had a good geographic location, the first Saudi state had good economic resources. During this era, a new neighborhood was built in Samhan, which is the Al-Terfaiya neighborhood and moved to it after the Qusaiba neighborhood was the center of government for a long time. During the reign of Imam Muhammad bin Saud and imams after him, the city of Diriyah became the capital of the state, and a source of economic, social, and cultural attraction. The end of the first Saudi state marked with the surrender of Imam Abdullah bin Saud to Ibrahim Pasha’s forces in 1818 and then he was executed in Istanbul. Nowadays, Diriyah is one of the largest mud neighborhoods and It is declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010.

The Second Saudi State[edit]

In 1824, after a fight that lasted for seven years, Imam Turki bin Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Saud retook Riyadh and established the second Saudi state. Imam Turki was able to unify most parts of the Arabian Peninsula in a short period of time, continuing the approach on which the first Saudi state was established. The state continued to rule the region until 1891 AD.

The Third Saudi State[edit]

After 10 years of the collapse of the second state, King Abdulaziz Al Saud established the third Saudi state when he retook Riyadh. After 30 years of many historical events and battles, King Abdul Aziz announced the unification of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932. Nowadays, this event is considered the national day of Saudi Arabia which in on September 23th every year.

The Saudi National Day[edit]

Nowadays, the declaration of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932 is considered the national day of Saudi Arabia and it is celebrated every 23 September. It was made a national holiday by King Abdullah in 2005.
