Save Pond Hockey (SPH) is a non-profit environmental organization that raises awareness about the issues of climate change through ice hockey. It was founded in 2015, the organization is based out of Helsinki in Finland.

Operations[edit]

SPH organize outdoor hockey tournaments to raise awareness and funds to fight climate change. Via its SPHx tournaments the charity has raised over 20,000€ for different climate change groups as of 11th October 2018.:[1]

SPHx Tournaments[edit]

Since 2015, over six tournaments have been organised in Finland[2]

2015[edit]

Awards[edit]

Save Pond Hockey were announced as a finalist in the Maapalloliiga (Earth League) competition organised by the Finnish Innovation Fund, Sitra.[9]. The Maapalloliiga competition's objective is to find solutions that inspire and activate people to live more environmentally friendly.[10]

Media[edit]

Save Pond Hockey has been featured in a news article in Helsingin Sanomat and a news program on MTV3 news in Finland following the participation of the President of Finland Sauli Niinistö in the 2017 Helsinki SPHx tournamenent.[11][12]. Save Pond Hockey have also been the feature of articles in Süddeutsche Zeitung and Tages-Anzeiger.[13][14]. In 2018, collaborating with artist Janne Käpylehto, Save Pond Hockey hosted the world's first rotating ice hockey game. This was achieved by having a free floating ice rink cut into frozen ice of Töölönlahti Bay (in Töölö and rotating during play.[15][16][17]
