Scalpel is a data recovery program for Linux, Windows and macOS used to recover files using their headers, footers, and data structures through a process known as file carving.[2] It is based on Foremost, and is freely available under the terms of Apache 2.0 License while also providing a wider set of features. It can be used as a general data recovery tool.[1]
History
Scalpel was forked from Foremost version 0.69 back in 2005 and then developed by Golden G. Richard III and Vico. In June 2013 the software source repository became hosted by The Sleuth Kit team.[1]
