Biography[edit]

Since 1930 he lived and studied in the city of Odessa.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10].

In 1942, he was captured and sent to Germany, where he worked at a military factory until 1945.

At the end of the war, Emmanuel Schiller was repatriated to the Soviet Union, sent to the dungeons of the GULAG.

In 1948, he was exiled to Siberia — the village of Kolyvan, Novosibirsk region.

He worked as the head of a village club, organized a Russian song choir, which later became a multiple diploma winner of All-Union, republican and regional festivals, screenings and competitions.

In 1957, he moved with his family to Pavlodar (Kazakh SSR). He worked at the October factory as a cultural organizer, where he created a Russian choir [11].

He graduated from the Pavlodar Tchaikovsky Music College with a degree in choir conductor (in 1963), having performed at the state exam with his choir [12].

He was invited as the artistic director of the Russian Folk Choir "Zori Semirech`ya" of the Almaty Production Association for plastics processing "Kyzyl-Tu" (in 1968).

In 1970 he returned to Pavlodar, where he continued his choirmaster activity.

In 1981, the thousandth concert of the folk choir under the direction of A. I. Schiller took place[13]

In December 1985, at the age of 63, he passed away.

Mother — Bertha Emmanuilovna Schiller (maiden name Schmeichel). Wife — Glafira Timofeevna Dudina (1929—1966). Son — Vladimir Emmanuilovich Schiller (1950), choral conductor, music teacher, Honorary Professor of the Kurmangazy Kazakh National Conservatory. Lives in Germany. Daughter — Lilia Emmanuilovna Schiller — musician, pianist, organist, conductor. Lives in Germany. Wife — Zinaida Vasilyevna Kriventsova (1941—2021). Daughter — Elvira Emmanuilovna Schiller is a medical employee. Lives in Pavlodar, Republic of Kazakhstan.

Choirmaster activity[edit]

E. (A.) I. Schiller is known as the organizer and artistic director of several choral groups and vocal ensembles:

  • Russian Song Choir in the village of Kolyvan, Novosibirsk region;
  • The Russian Song Choir at the Pavlodar Mechanical Plant "October" (in 1961, by the decision of the Kazakh Council of Trade Unions, the honorary title of "National" was awarded). The choir has visited more than 150 cities and villages of the USSR. In June 1967, the Russian Song Choir of the Pavlodar Tractor Plant under the direction of E. (A.) I. Schiller took part in a concert of masters of arts of the Kazakh SSR as part of the Decade of Literature and Arts of the Kazakh SSR in Moscow;
  • German folklore ensemble "Ehrengold" ("Golden ears") in the Collective Farm "30 years of Kazakhstan" in Pavlodar region (organized in 1974); in 1975, the ensemble received the honorary title of "National"; ensemble performed in Kazakhstan, in the republics of the USSR; in 1985 ensemble performed in Moscow at the XII World Festival of Youth and Students; went to Germany with concerts;
  • Ensemble "Yunost"`("Youth") on the basis of the city vocational school (Pavlodar);
  • Chorus of veterans of the Pavlodar Palace of Culture of tractor builders;
  • 1968-1970, E. (A.) I. Schiller was the artistic director of the Russian Folk Choir "Zori Semirech`ya" at the Almaty Production Association for plastics processing "Kyzyl-Tu".
  • In 1998, the Russian National Choir of the former Tractor Plant in Pavlodar was named after the creator of this collective — Alexander Schiller [2].
  • The choir, named after Alexander Schiller, is located in the Palace of Culture named after Estai in Pavlodar region[14][15]

Composing activity[edit]

A. I. Schiller is the author of more than 500 songs, vocal compositions [17] for various choral compositions, including the song "Hello to Moscow" on the M. V. Isakovsky’s poem, "Irtysh lyric" on the poems of the Pavlodar poet A. Osmushkin, vocal works for the German folk ensemble "Ehrengold"[16][17].

Awards[edit]

Medals: "For the development of virgin lands" (1959); "For labor valor" (1967); "For valiant labor. In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of V. I. Lenin" (1970);

The title "Honored Worker of Culture of the Kazakh SSR" was awarded by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Kazakh SSR in 1972.

Diplomas: Honorary diploma of the Supreme Soviet of the Kazakh SSR (1973); diplomas of the VDNH of the USSR, the Central Committee of the Komsomol of the USSR, the Board of the Peace Foundation, the Pavlodar Regional Executive Committee and others.

Memory[edit]

  • In 1998, the Russian National Choir of the former Tractor Plant in Pavlodar was named after the creator of this collective — Alexander Schiller [2].
  • In May 2022, concerts, meetings, commemorative events dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of A. I. Schiller and the 65th anniversary of the choir bearing his name were held in Pavlodar [2].
  • On November 27, 2022, in Pavlodar, at the Estai Palace of Culture, an anniversary concert of the A. Schiller National Choir was held, dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the founding of the collective [2]
