Map of the province of Posen-West Prussia with district boundaries (1938)

The Administrative region of Schneidemühl (German: Regierungsbezirk Schneidemühl) was formed in 1922 in the Prussian province of Grenzmark Posen-West Prussia. It initially consisted of three disconnected areas of different sizes with a total of nine districts, which bordered Poland in the east and the Prussian provinces of Pomerania, Brandenburg and Lower Silesia in the west.

After the dissolution of the Province of Grenzmark Posen-West Prussia in 1938, it lost the four districts in the two southern areas to the provinces of Silesia and Brandenburg, but was enlarged by four districts in the north and was renamed the Administrative region of Posen-West Prussia. It was incorporated into the Province of Pomerania where it existed until 1945.

History[edit]

On November 20, 1919, the Regierungspräsident of the Bromberg Region took up his new role as governor of the administrative district of Grenzmark West Prussia-Posen. This administered for the time being all the districts of the former Prussian provinces of Posen and West Prussia west of the Vistula river and the Polish Corridor, which were left to Germany by the Treaty of Versailles. After this area had acquired the status of a province under the name Grenzmark Posen-West Prussia on August 1, 1922, the Schneidemühl Region was established as the only administrative region of this province. On October 1, 1938, following a territorial reorganization and dissolution of the Province of Grenzmark Posen-West Prussia, the administrative region of Schneidemühl was incorporated into the Province of Pomerania, and was renamed Grenzmark Posen-West Prussia for reasons of tradition.

Administrative divisions[edit]

The Schneidemühl Region consisted of nine districts, including the urban district of Schneidemühl. The seat of the district government was Schneidemühl. On October 1, 1938, four districts in the south were reassigned to the provinces of Silesia and Brandenburg, and four new districts were incorporated into the Schneidemühl Region. Two of the new districts were added from the Frankfurt Region of the Province of Brandenburg the other two from the Köslin Region of the Province of Pomerania.
