SchoolTool is an American, web-based Student Management System (SMS) product developed by Mindex,[1][2] a software development company based in Rochester, New York.[3] SchoolTool is used by some educational institutions in New York for the management of student data, administrative tasks, and communication. District administrators, teachers, parents, and students can access the software through a web browser or application on a computer, tablet, or phone.[4]

    Product Overview

SchoolTool is an online, non-downloadable software designed to facilitate school management within the scope of IC 042. It operates on a software-as-a-service (SAAS) model, providing cloud computing services for schools and school districts. The software offers tools for student information management, including scheduling, grading, assignment and discipline tracking, billing, financial management, and reporting and analysis.

    History

In 1999, the East Rochester UFSD initiated a search for a web-based Student Management System, also referred to as a student information system, to streamline their administrative processes.[5] Mindex was selected as the developer for their SMS and they collaborated with East Rochester UFSD staff to gather requirements and insights, leading to the creation of a functional specification. In 2001, SchoolTool was launched as New York State's first web-based SMS, which was subsequently implemented at the East Rochester UFSD during the 2001–2002 academic year.[6]

In 2009, the Greater Southern Tier Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) worked with Mindex to develop more configurable features. Mindex implemented custom alerts, such as User Defined Screens (UDS) and User Designed Alerts (UDA), to enable users to store and access personalized data, including assessments from sources beyond New York. These custom alerts were used during the pandemic when schools established their own benchmarks due to the unavailability of New York State testing.[7][8]

In 2015, Mindex introduced the SchoolTool Mobile App,[9] for students and parents.[10][11]

In 2020, Mindex migrated SchoolTool infrastructure to Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud Hosting. Mindex is a certified AWS Advanced Tier Services Partner.[12][13]

    Organization

Mindex, a software application company, is headquartered in Rochester, New York. Situated in Monroe County, Rochester is home to several technology companies.[14]

    Other Student Information Systems

SchoolTool is just one example of a student management system used by educational institutions. In addition to SchoolTool, there are several other SIS platforms available outside of New York State that offer student management services to schools, districts, or higher education institutions for other states. This includes PowerSchool, the creator of Schoology, as well as Infinite Campus and others.[citation needed]
