Schulman b.v.
Schulman is a Dutch company active in the trade and auction of coins, medals and paper money. The company was originally based on the Keizersgracht in Amsterdam. It later moved to the Jan Luijkenstraat in the Museum Quarter, where it is currently located.
History
Origins in the nineteenth century
Jacob Schulman (1849 to 1914) began trading in coins and medals in 1880 in Amersfoort.[1] In 1889 he organised his first auction. His sons Maurits and Andreas later joined the company.[1]: Script error: The function "hyphen2dash" does not exist.
In 1902 the company was established on the Keizersgracht in Amsterdam.[2] Within the family various specialisations emerged in the field of European and overseas coins.[1]
Second World War
The war affected the family in several ways. Maurits Schulman, son of the founder, was deported in 1943 and died in Sobibor.[3] Jacques Schulman (1906 to 1990), grandson of Jacob, continued parts of the activities during and after the war. He briefly ran an independent business in The Hague and later returned to Amsterdam to continue the family firm.[4][1]
Further twentieth century to the present
Jacques Schulman played an important role in international numismatics. He was an auctioneer, dealer and author, and from 1953 to 1961 he served as president of the International Association of Professional Numismatists (IAPN).[5] Alongside his regular activities he worked to share his knowledge and enthusiasm with young people and in the early nineteen fifties he organised a weekly grab bag for secondary school pupils where they could expand or exchange their coin collections.
The firm gained wider recognition through auctions of several well known finds such as the Huizinge coin hoard, the Serooskerke coin hoard and the treasure of Randwijk. Later a second enterprise emerged within the family. Laurens Schulman, son of Jacques (born 1906), started a firm in Bussum and later in Harderwijk.[6] His daughter Yvette continued this enterprise.[4]
Publications
From the late nineteenth century onward the Schulman family published auction catalogues, price lists and reference works. Auctions of the firm are mentioned in publications such as the 1930 Yearbook for Numismatics and Medal Studies. The rNumis database contains an overview of more than two hundred auctions held by the firm between 1891 and 1976.
A well known work by Jacques Schulman (born 1906) is the Handbook of Dutch Coins 1795 to 1975, in which he introduced a numbering system that is used internationally and known as the Schulman number.
