Christopher “Scott” Selzer (born April 22, 1977) is an American businessman, educator, and entrepreneur. He is the founder, president, former CEO, and chief product architect of StruXure the premier manufacturer of smart pergolas and cabanas.

[1]

Selzer was born in Taipei, Taiwan, where his father, an engineer, worked for CTS Corp. Selzer attended Western Michigan University on a football scholarship, where he earned his BA degree with the intent of becoming a middle school teacher. He later earned his Master of Education Leadership from the University of Illinois, Springfield. It was with these degrees, skills as a part-time contractor, and an ever-present entrepreneurial spirit that propelled Selzer into the pergola manufacturing business, helping homeowners bring the indoors out.

Early and Family Life

Scott Selzer was born to parents Ken and Judy (Trinkel) Selzer on April 22, 1977 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, where Ken Selzer was running an electronics plant for CTS Corp. Due to the elder Selzer’s employment opportunities, the family, including sister Beth (1974), relocated often, spending Selzer’s first two years in Taipei and Kaohsiung, followed by two years in Paso Robles, California, before returning to Kaohsiung for two additional years. As a young child, Selzer was fascinated by how things worked, always tinkering with items that could be taken apart and put back together. From 1984-1987, the family lived in Elkhart, Indiana, followed by two years in Kalispell, Montana, before settling in Caro, Michigan for Selzer’s formative school years. Selzer recalls being his father’s apprentice with multiple fix-it projects around the house, including building decks. Selzer attended Caro High School, excelling in sports, including Football (All-State), Wrestling (All-State), and Track and Field (shot put / 4x100 relay). On July 8, 2000, Selzer married his college sweetheart, Jill Yeagley, who also studied to become a teacher. After graduation, the couple moved to Fulton County Georgia to teach. They subsequently had two daughters, Haylie (2003) and Hope (2008).

Education

Selzer attended Western Michigan University (1996-2001) on a full-ride football scholarship, red shirting for one year. He was a 3-1/2-year fullback starter, and served as team captain and received the Mike Gary Sportsmanship Award in his Senior year of college. Selzer also attended University of Illinois, Springfield, where he earned his Master of Educational Leadership degree in 2008.

Career

Selzer’s first career move after university was a three-year stint at Medlock Bridge Elementary (3rd grade teacher) in Johns Creek, GA. This position was followed by four years teaching at Hopewell Middle School in Milton, GA. (6th grade, social studies and math). From 2004-2008 while teaching, Selzer put his construction skills to the test during weekends, after school, and on school breaks becoming self-employed in his own “School’s Out Construction” business. It was during this time that Selzer was asked by a client to come up with a shade solution for his back patio that would also let sunlight stream in during certain times of the year. This ruled out the traditional wood slat pergola, which didn’t allow controlled sun versus shade emission. Selzer searched for a pivoting-louver pergola, but did not find one manufactured in the U.S. This set him on the course to build one himself, which he did so successfully that he stopped teaching and introduced Adjustable Patio Covers (http://www.adjustablepatiocovers.com) in 2009, the first company to bring an adjustable louvered system to the East Coast. The company grew rapidly and evolved into a manufacturer of its own system in 2011, rebranding to Arcadia Building Products. In 2018, the company brand evolved further into StruXure Outdoor, before becoming StruXure in 2020.

[8]

Continued steady growth led to the company’s move into a new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility and corporate headquarters just north of Atlanta, GA (Dahlonega) in 2016. The following year, they also expanded operations from their existing Southern California office to a much larger West Coast Fulfillment Center and Showroom, located just outside of Las Vegas, NV (Henderson). From 2018-2021, they continued to grow on both coasts in order to keep up with demand, and now have seven facilities producing for North America: four facilities in Dahlonega, GA and three in Henderson, NV.

StruXure was recognized on the Inc. 5000 List of Fastest Growing Private Companies for seven consecutive years, from 2015 – 2021, and on Entrepreneur 360’s Best Company List in 2016, 2018, and 2019.

On January 4, 2022, it was announced that The AZEK Company, Inc. had acquired StruXure. This strategic move not only added StruXure’s established and compatible product to AZEK’s exceptional and sustainable offerings— including TimberTech® decking, Ultralox® railing, Versatex® and AZEK Trim®—but also provided StruXure with a level of support that can accelerate its R&D efforts and steadfast mission to bring the indoors out.
