Scott Symons is an American football coach and former player. He is currently the Defensive coordinator at Southern Methodist University. He has also coordinated defenses at Liberty University, the University of West Georgia, Harding University, and Arkansas Tech University.

Coaching career[edit]

Harding[edit]

Following Symons’ playing career, he coached the linebackers and wide receivers at St. Dominic High School in O'Fallon, Missouri while finishing his degree. The following season, he was hired as a graduate assistant at Harding. Symons spent 2008–2011 at Harding, eventually working his way up to co-defensive coordinator.[1]

Arkansas State[edit]

In 2012, Symons was hired as a defensive quality control coach by Gus Malzahn at Arkansas State.[2]

Arkansas Tech[edit]

In 2013, Symons returned to the Division II level as the defensive coordinator at Arkansas Tech.[3] Symons took a defense that finished last in the Great American Conference in 2012 and improved it to seventh in just one season.[2]

West Georgia[edit]

In 2014, Symons was hired by West Georgia Head Coach Will Hall to run the Wolves’ defense. Symons’ defenses were dominant, finishing in the top-25 nationally in both scoring and total defense from 2014 to 2017.[2]

Memphis[edit]

Symons spent the 2018 season as the inside linebackers coach on Mike Norvell’s staff at Memphis, where his former boss, Will Hall, was also on staff.[2]

Liberty[edit]

When Hugh Freeze was hired as the head coach at Liberty, he hired Symons as his defensive coordinator. From 2019 to 2021, Symons transformed Liberty's defense in to a top 15 unit, finishing 11th in total defense after the 2020 season, earning an nomination for the Broyles Award.[4] He also helped develop at least four players that signed NFL contracts, including: Solomon Ajayi, Elijah Benton, Jessie Lemonier and Bejour Wilson.[3]

SMU[edit]

Following the 2021 season, Symons was hired by newly hired SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee, as the defensive coordinator.[5] Symons and Lashlee previously worked together at Arkansas State in 2013.

Playing career[edit]

Symons played linebacker at Lindenwood for head coach Patrick Ross, starting for two seasons.[2]

Personal life[edit]

Symons and his wife, Kristen, have four children: Peyton, Hudson, Rhett and Logan..[3]

Symons graduated from Fort Worth Christian School before obtaining a bachelor's degree in history,[1] and then added a master's in Kinesiology.[2]
