Sean Parnell (born July 15, 1981) is an American politician, author, speaker, and former U.S. Army Captain from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A Republican, he ran for the U.S. House of Representatives in PA-17 in 2020 and the U.S. Senate in 2022. He is a New York Times best-selling author.[1]

Early life and education[edit]

Parnell was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on July 15, 1981.

Military career[edit]

He became a U.S. Army ranger in Afghanistan for the U.S. military. In 2006, he and his platoon fought off hundreds of Taliban who attempted to capture a hill held by his platoon.[2] Parnell was wounded twice during the firefight and suffered a traumatic head injury as well. He was medically discharged from the army in 2010.[2] He received two Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart.[3]

After leaving the army, Parnell authored the New York Times best-selling book, Outlaw Platoon, telling the story of his platoon's combat experience in Afghanistan. [1]

Political career[edit]

2020 U.S. House campaign[edit]

In 2020, Parnell unsuccessfully ran for the U.S. House of Representatives in PA-17 against incumbent Conor Lamb. He received 48.9% of the vote compared to 51.1% for Lamb. Parnell's campaign was endorsed by former President Donald Trump.

Parnell spoke at the Republican National Convention in 2020 and supported Trump's reelection. He praised Trump's energy policies and his stance on the Second Amendment. He spoke out against his opponent Conor Lamb and then-presidential candidate Joe Biden.[4]

2022 U.S. Senate campaign[edit]

On May 11, 2021, Parnell announced that he is running for the U.S. Senate in 2022. He is running to fill the vacant seat of Republican Senator Pat Toomey.[5]

Personal life[edit]

Parnell is Catholic. He is not married, although he is a father of three children.[2]
