Sean Teare (born 1979) is an American lawyer currently serving as District Attorney for Harris County, Texas. Teare was sworn in as DA on January 1, 2025.[2] Before being elected District Attorney, Teare served as Unit Chief of the Vehicular Crimes Division of the District Attorney's Office.[3] He is a member of the Democratic Party.

Early life

Born in 1979 in Houston, Teare attended high school at St. Thomas High School. He graduated from college at the University of Houston in 2004, with a major in history and minor in English[4] and attended law school at the University of Houston Law Center, graduating in 2007 with a JD. He is the son of Barry Teare and Deborah Thomason Teare. [cite tk]

Early career

Sean Teare became licensed to practice law in Texas in 2007.[5] Teare served as an intern under former DA Chuck Rosenthal, and after graduating, joined the office as a Pre Commit Prosecutor [doing what? if we can find a cite]. Teare began working as former DA Kim Ogg's Vehicular Crimes Unit Chief on January 1, 2017.[6]

District Attorney

After more than 11 years as a prosecutor in the Harris County DA's Office, Teare joined the Cogdell Law Firm as a defense attorney in February 2023. He announced his candidacy to challenge Ogg in May 2023.[7]

Teare defeated incumbent Kim Ogg in the Democratic primary, then went on to beat Republican candidate Dan Simons in the general election.[8]

Personal life

Sean and his wife Lauren Teare have four children and reside in Houston, Texas. He is a little league coach and heavily involved in his kids' sports activities. He is an ardent alumnus of the University of Houston, catching as many Cougar games as he can. [cite?]
