The Second Battle of M2-XFE was a massive-scale virtual battle fought in Eve Online, a space-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), which took place on 30 and 31 December 2020. It is one of the largest battles to have occurred in the game, in terms of Titans (the largest class of warships) sunk. The in-game cost of the losses totalled about 13 trillion Interstellar Kredit (ISK), an estimated theoretical real-world value of $150,000 to $180,000 USD derived from the value of PLEX, an item purchasable with real currency that can be redeemed either for subscription time or traded for in-game currency.
The virtual battle was fought primarily in the M2-XFE star system. The conflict was the continuation of the Battle of M2-XFE, a very large fight over a player-controlled space-station in that system, owned by the player group Goonswarm Federation (GSF). Multiple alliances had been invading systems held by GSF since the latter half of 2020, and this was one of the major battles in this offensive.
Background[edit]
EVE Online is a persistent world, massively multiplayer online role playing space trading and combat game. Players control corporations and can form alliances with other players, which in turn can be formed into coalitions. By early 2020, the player coalition known as the Imperium had become one of the largest and most powerful in the game. In mid-2020, multiple other coalitions had declared war on the Imperium and its allies, invading GSF-held space in what would be known by invaders as World War Bee II or by defenders as World War Bee (GSF calling the previous one as the Casino War due to the source of the war funding their enemies had).[4]
As a consequence of the Battle of M2-XFE, hundreds of supercapital ships of the PAPI mega coalition - the largest part of their supercapital fleet - had remained trapped within M2-XFE system, near the Big's Disco Palace Keepstar owned by GSF. Although the extraction operation could have been tried at any time, the vunerability window of the Keepstar made it a choice 2 January 2021 near midnight (UTC) for the best time, if PAPI was going to attempt to destroy the Keepstar. So in preparation, The Imperium repaired, refitted and rearmed its whole fleet -since The Imperium retained zone control- and deployed in the zone and established grid control (very much like air supremacy,[5] which also includes setting devices that make ships unable to escape) waiting for the larger invading fleet for their entrance into the battleground. The Mittani, leader of The Imperium coalition, gave a State of the Goonion speech, stating that the goal of the upcoming fleet was the annhilitaion of the invading fleet.[6]
Battle[edit]
The battle began with invaders subcapital fleets trying to destroy the Keepstar, but they fell against the massive defending capital fleet. Then, invading Titan pilot's began to log in. Due to longtime well-known game mechanics and game server behavior, the whole PAPI fleet was unable to get in simultaneously, forming an effective time-based bottleneck, which allowed defending Titans and other supercapital Imperium ships to long range destroy the invading titans, as they appeared on grid.[7]
Aftermath[edit]
The battle was an overwhelming victory for The Imperium forces, who even achieved the secondary objective of defending the Keepstar. The battle was the largest defeat for the PAPI mega coalition since war declaration in mid 2020. In total, PAPI and allies lost up to 13 trillion ISK, while The Imperium and allies lost about 100 billion ISK.[1] By holding the field control after the battle and salvaging the wrecks, the battle meant a net win with effectively no losses for The Imperium.
