Second Wave is a 2023 free-to-play online anime hero MOBA shooter video game by Challengers Games. The game was developed by Challengers Games, a studio based in Seoul, South Korea, and began development in July 2022.
Second Wave was officially announced at GDC 2023,[1] with a Closed Alpha to be conducted for PC on the Steam platform, on May 27, 2023.[2]
Setting[edit]
Second Wave takes place in a fantasy world called the Armantia. A largely technological driven world, mixed with magic. Within Armantia, an industrial revolutionary war broke out many years ago due to the presence of a new, mysterious artefact known as The Arcane Stone. The stone was sought after by many countries within Armantia, such as the Warrior Nation of Karin, the Hunter Nation of Musir, and the Naval Nation of Les Dimas. All three would form the devastating Three-Nation Alliance, which would be used to plunder resources from other countries in order to further their technology and power. Years later, a new generation of characters are born within this broken world of Armantia, as they take on the battle at Trestyn, a city within Les Dimas, in order to defend or capture The Arcane Stone.[3]
Gameplay[edit]
Second Wave is a hero-based first-person and third-person shooter MOBA that focuses on objective gameplay. Some modes allow for two groups of five players each, competing for either combat-based goals, capturing objectives or domination of certain areas. The game is set in cell-shaded, anime-esque fantasy maps all based within the lore of Second Wave. The same character cannot be chosen more than once by the same team, allowing for each team to add a different flavour to the balancing of the game. Each character has their own weapons, skills and fighting style. These weapons and skills can be enhanced due to the in-game Store System, which is only available during a match. These upgrades do not carry over to another match. Every character can be personalized in the form of skins, portraits or banners. Each player can customize their personal interface, by utilizing different avatars, borders, banners, and titles, in order to symbolize the player's profile.
Abilities[edit]
Each character has a basic attack, along with varying skills which are personalized to the character's attributes. In addition to the basic attack, the game features an extra 3 skills, which can vary from adding passive bonuses, to a dodge in order to escape an enemy's grasp. Lastly, an "Ultimate" skill is added to each character, allowing for their unique skillset to shine through. Some of these "Ultimate" skills are close range, long range, or even Healing Based, and some, such as for the character Aegis, it is a way to switch between Ra and Shu - Light and Dark, allowing her to either be a Healer or Melee-based class.

Development[edit]
Second Wave began as an idea after Challengers Games CEO Tamura Koji, had worked on the popular MMORPG TERA and had led the development team for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One version of the game. Having left Krafton, he was able to negotiate with various companies until Nimble Neuron agreed to allow him to create a subsidiary called Challengers Studio. The studio's first objective was to create a console version of the popular Eternal Return, a battle royale with an anime aesthetic.[5]
Soon after the announcement and interview with Tamura Koji and Kakao Games, the project came to a halt. Challengers Studio was dismantled, and in July 2022, Tamura Koji would re-emerge with his own studio under the name Challengers Games, with no parent company. During this time, he had drawn some sketches and ideas of what he'd like to create, and began writing the story of Second Wave and the lore behind the world of Armantia.
In August 2022, it was announced privately via the studio's Discord Server, that a brand-new game was being developed with the title Project B.[6] On January 28, 2023, the name reveal of Second Wave was unveiled along with key details about the lore of the game.[7]
