Securing Antarctica's Environmental Future

The Australian Research Council Special Research Initiative for Securing Antarctica’s Environmental Future (SAEF) is a multi-university research centre whose mission is to understand the changes taking place across the Antarctic region – to its climate and its biodiversity – and develop innovative ways to forecast, mitigate and manage these changes. Its overarching goal is to collaborate with policymakers to identify conservation priorities and help make the right decisions for Antarctica’s future.[1] The facility opened in 2020 and is funded for seven years. It is funded by a grant of A$38 million from the Australian Research Council. [2][3]

Organisation

As of February 2024, the Director of SAEF is Antarctic ecologist Professor Steven Chown,[4], from Monash University, the Administering Organisation. Collaborators and partners are:
