Segal Bikes
Segal Bikes is an Israeli boutique designer and manufacturer of magnesium road bicycles. It hand-makes about 300 frames per year.[1]
Corporate history[edit]
Segal Bikes is a subsidiary of Sahal-Alubin, a Kiryat Bialik-based manufacturer of aluminum and magnesium-alloy products.[1] The bike frames are made in the same factory as the industrial products [2]
Road Bikes[edit]
The company is known for building its road bike frames with a magnesium alloy. Magnesium is strong and lightweight, 35% lighter than aluminum, and absorbs energy well[3], so suitable for road bikes, but as magnesium is highly reactive, it requires alloying with other metal to prevent it from being corroded by the oxygen in the atmosphere. [4]
The company currently makes two models: The Compact and the Classic. As all bikes are hand made, buyers can specify the components they want, choosing from SRAM Rival, Force or Red, and wheels from either Carbotec or Marchisio.[5]
Sponsorships[edit]
Segal sponsors the Dutch UCI cycling team STMA Cycling, who ride Segal bikes.[6]
Adventure Stretcher[edit]
In addition to making bicycles, the company collaborated with engineering students at the Technion and with the United Hatzalah EMS network to develop the "Adventure Stretcher" for use in difficult terrain.[7] The stretcher uses a large bicycle wheel in its center to facilitate transportation of patients over long distances[8]. A typical use case is to transport a trail-bike rider who crashed and injured himself on a hard-to-reach trail, in which case the stretcher could be attached to the wheel of the cyclist's bike. A puncture-proof wheel is also developed by Segal Bikes[9]
