Torvelo Racing
Torvelo Racing is a Scottish amateur cycling team founded in 2019. The team is an inclusive men's and women's team. The team is affiliated to both Scottish Cycling and CTT with a focus on road racing and time trial racing at regional and national level.
Team History
The team formed as Torvelo Racing in 2019 with a view to begin competitive racing in 2020.
The team was created to support riders looking to progress within the sport towards professional pathways and riders looking to stay in the sport at a highly competitive amateur level not always supported within more traditional cycling clubs.
The team had limited racing opportunities towards the end of 2019. Their first competitive race was the 2019 Scottish National Track Championships where the team narrowly missed out on a bronze medal finishing 4th in the men's 4km Team Pursuit.
In the absence of of a full racing schedule during 2020, Gavin Dempster with support from the team attempted to break the fastest known time recorded for cycling the NC500 which was held at that time by James McCallum. The record attempt had to be abandoned due to adverse weather conditions[1].
Despite the global COVID-19 pandemic having a significant impact on their first two years together, the team have enjoyed great success since competitive amateur racing properly resumed in the UK towards the end of spring 2021. The team have enjoyed numerous wins, podiums and top ten finishes at many regional and district races. Many highlights of their 2021 campaign in particular have come at National level.
At the 2021 Scottish Road Race Championships, Beth Macivor took silver in the women's race and Gavin Dempster took bronze in the men's race[2][3]. At the 2021 Scottish National Criterium Championships Beth Macivor took gold in the women's race and Corin Halliday took bronze in the men's race[4][5]. The team took gold at the women's Scottish National Team Time Trial Championships[6]. Continuing a good run of form at Scottish national championships, the team took home a gold, silver and bronze from the Scottish National Women's Veterans Road Race Championships with Sharon Bird and Zosia taking gold and silver respectively in he V40 category and Fiona Cockburn taking bronze in the V50 category[7]. To close out the 2021 Scottish National Championships calendar, Louise Potter took silver and Fiona Cockburn took bronze in the Cyclo-cross championships[8]
Away from Scottish National Championships, the team enjoyed a number of other strong results including a win[9] for Basel Razouk at the Stewarton Challenge TT.
The team were represented at a numberof the British National Road Race Championships in Lincoln.
As part of it's commitment to supporting the wider bike racing scene, the team organised it's first race in 2021. The Women's Battle of Black Loch Road Race[10] was held on October 3rd 2021. The race was won by Torvelo's own Beth Maciver.
In 2022 Torvelo Racing's Gavin Dempster was selected by British Cycling to represent Great Britain at the UCI Esports World Championships on February 26th, 2022[11].
