Semyon Isaakovich Shvartsburd (Russian: Семён Исаакович Шварцбурд; 11 November 1918 – 31 May 1996) was a Soviet mathematician and mathematics educator. He is best known for creating, in 1959, one of the first specialised mathematics classes in the Soviet Union, at Moscow School No. 444, which became a model for the country's network of advanced physics-and-mathematics schools.

Biography

Shvartsburd was born on 11 November 1918 in Rybnitsa. In childhood he contracted poliomyelitis, which left him with a lifelong disability. He graduated from the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of Odessa University in 1940. He taught theoretical mechanics and later worked as a mathematics teacher in Moscow. From 1967 he headed the laboratory of applied mathematics at the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of the USSR. He died on 31 May 1996 in Haifa, Israel.

Contributions to mathematics education

In 1959 Shvartsburd established at Moscow School No. 444 the first specialised mathematics class in the country, oriented toward future programmers and computing specialists; in 1967 he founded the Moscow Mathematical Technicum, for which he wrote teaching and methodological materials.[1] He was an early advocate of introducing computer science into school education and collaborated with the mathematician Andrey Kolmogorov. Together with Naum Vilenkin he co-authored the textbook Algebra and Mathematical Analysis.

Awards and recognition

Shvartsburd was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of the USSR in 1968 and received the degree of Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences in 1972. He was named an Honoured Teacher of the RSFSR in 1962 and was the first laureate of the Ushinsky Prize.
