In December 2015, a tornado struck the company's nursing home in Rowlett, Texas [12] leaving patients and residents in limbo after the destruction. The nursing home reopened in 2017 after extensive repairs.
In August 2017, Hurricane Harvey caused severe flooding in the Port Arthur, Texas area, which caused two of the company's nursing homes to have an emergency evacuation[13] which garnered national publicity[14] that involved alleged members of the Cajun Navy. The state reopened the investigation in August 2018[15] . The incident has been a topic of a Senate Finance Committee report "Sheltering in Danger." [16]
On the November earnings call, Sabra Healthcare REIT discussed its negotiations with Senior Care Centers and the use of harsh negotiating tactics the company used to prevent the REIT from selling the real estate of the Senior Care Centers' operate properties to an unfriendly buyer who would discontinue the leases with Senior Care Centers. [17] Other REIT groups considering action on the matter as well. [18]
