Seo Soojin (Hangul: 서수진, Hanja: 徐穗珍 ; born March 9, 1998), often referred to mononymously as Soojin or Cherry, is a South Korean singer and dancer. She is the main dancer and vocalist of the South Korean girl group (G)I-dle under Cube Entertainment[1].
Early Life
Seo Soojin was born in South Korea’s Gyeonggi province. She completed her education from Wow Middle School. She has a younger sister named Seo Ye-Jin.
As a child, at the age of five, her mother enrolled her in jazz dance classes, which piqued her interest in dance and music. While growing up, she became fascinated by the Korean martial art Taekwondo, wanting to become a Taekwondo master. She has a black belt in Taekwondo. However, her earlier interest in dance and music was reignited, leading her to join a dance and vocal academy.
Initially, her father was hesitant, and she had to convince him for two years, from age 13 to 15, before she could pursue it fully. Having convinced her father, she prepared to enter an art high school and was accepted into the well-known Korean Arts High School in the Department of Music. At school, she improved her skills through performances, events, practical examinations, and joining a dance team.[2][3]
Career
Pre-debut
She was initially scouted while still in school and almost debuted with the group VIVIDIVA under DN Entertainment, when she was 18, using the stage name N.NA, but eventually left the group after one year.[4] She took part in some pre-debut activities and promotions as a dancer and vocalist. But due to the debut being delayed, she left the group before its debut.[5] However, this experience helped her learn a lot, which would eventually help her later as a trainee and successfully debuting with Cube Entertainment.
Later, in 2016, when she received an offer for a Cube audition right before her third year, she auditioned with Boa’s No.1 song. She was eventually taken in as a Cube trainee in 2016 and trained for two years before her debut.
During her trainee years, Soojin appeared as the fox girl character in Jeon Soyeon’s ‘Jelly’ MV and ‘Idle Song’ MV.[6]
Career with G(I)-dle
Seo Soojin debuted with (G)I-dle on May 2, 2018, as the main dancer, lead rapper, and vocalist, with their mini-album I Am and the title song "Latata". She introduced herself as the "Pretty Spring girl". She is known for her alluring charisma on stage.[7]
She was praised highly in Queendom while representing (G)I-dle.[8] She was ranked third for her "Senorita+Power" performance in the dance battle, and her fan-cam of the performance gained over a million views on Youtube.
Recognition
She is known for her alluring dance style, body line, and figure.[9][10] In January 2020, she was voted as the second-best among female idols for Best body in a survey of 116 Kpop idols.[11][12]
Her dance cover of Ariana Grande's "7 rings" on Mnet's Youtube Channel, M2 Studio Choom, has millions of views on Youtube.[13]
Personal life
She is often known for her strong persona with an undeniable presence on screen but is said to be shy and cute when off-screen.[14][15] Her MBTI is ISFP. Her tattoos are one of the most searched things about her.[16]
Relationship
After rumors surrounding Soojin and Lee Hoe-taek circulated in mid-2018, Cube Entertainment released a statement that they had dated in the past but had broken up.[17]
