Serena (セレナ) is a fictional character in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise, introduced in the 2013 video games Pokémon X and Y, as one of two characters the player can choose at the start of the game, and has appeared in numerous Pokémon media including anime and manga.
Concept and creation[edit]
Her name was based from the word serene which means "calm" and "peaceful".[5]
The character was designed by Ken Sugimori and Atsuko Nishida for the video game version.[6] While the anime and movie version was designed by Toshihito Hirooka,[7] and for manga version by Satoshi Yamamoto.[8]
Appearances[edit]
Serena first appears in Pokemon X and Y game as a playable character if the player chooses and also as a rival if the player chooses a male character, Calem.[nb 1][9] As a new feature in the game, the character selected by the player will display four different emotional reactions: surprise, disappointment, joy and excitement. Meanwhile, as a rival, the character will show more of a human side such as friendliness and an attitude of being ready to help.[10][11]
In anime series[edit]
Serena first appeared in Pokémon the Series: XY's episode "Kalos, Where Dreams and Adventures Begin!".[12] It is known that she already knew Ash Ketchum when they both attended the Professor Oak's summer camp in Pallet Town. During this time, Serena had fallen and injured her leg and Ash then helped her with her injury and she starts to have a crush on him. After learning that Ash is in Kalos, she decides to leave home to reunite him, and upon doing so comes along with him on his journey without having a specified goal. After experiencing numerous events like the Sycamore summer camp, she learns about Pokémon Showcases from Shauna and decides to become a Pokémon Performer.[13] Following a heartbreaking loss in her debut Showcase, she cuts her hair and begins wearing a new outfit.[14] After obtaining three Princess Keys, she competes in the Gloire City Master Class Showcase, ultimately going one-on-one with Kalos Queen Aria, whom she is unsuccessful in defeating. Once the Kalos league and Team Flare crisis comes to an end, Serena ponders on future plans. After encouragement from Ash, she prepares to compete in the Pokémon contests that occur in Hoenn.[15] Before parting, she gives Ash a kiss, and confess the feelings of love that have been hidden for so long.[16]
She returned in the 105th episode of Pokémon Ultimate Journeys: The Series, where she encouraged Chloe to perform at the Lilycove City Pokémon Contest by giving her the exact same words that Ash said to Serena throughout her journey with him.[17] She tied with Lisia for the number one spot. Her Braixen has since evolved into a Delphox. Just before Ash, Chloe, and Goh departed for Vermillion City, she briefly reunited with Ash where they both shared their respective goals to each other. She also promised to support Ash in World Coordination Series.[18]
If we talk about the looks of Serena then she is a tall and slender girl with fair skin and long, honey-blonde hair that she usually wears in a ponytail. She has large, grey eyes and a small, pink nose. Serena has a fashionable sense of style and often wears stylish clothing, such as skirts, dresses, and jackets. And apart from Pokemon X and Y game, she isn't available in any other version.
Other appearances[edit]
Y or Yvonne Gabena appeared in Pokémon Adventures X & Y chapters as main character that loosely based from Serena.[19] Y is a young Sky Trainer trainee, having chosen to become one to oppose people's expectations of her following in her mother's footsteps as a Rhyhorn racer.[19]
Serena appeared in Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction and Hoopa and the Clash of Ages manga, serving the same role as in the respective movies they were based on.[20][21]
Serena also appeared as Pokémon Trainer in Pokémon Masters EX, where she forms a sync pair with Fennekin and its evolutions Braixen and Delphox.[22] She also appears alongside Calem as a Pokémon Trainer trophy in Super Smash Bros.[23] Also, one of Jigglypuff's alternate costumes has it wearing Serena's hat.[24]

tag Meanwhile, Randolph Ramsay from GameSpot wrote even though Pokemon X and Y are less challenging than the previous games, there are still interesting sides to watch, especially the protagonists, who have their own charm both as playable characters and as rivals.[25]
Serena enjoyed good reception for her anime appearance. Megan Peters of Comic Book wrote Serena as one of Ash's best companions if not the greatest, which since her first appearance, Serena not only displays her character development, but her bond and crush with Ash is able to make fans polarized between likes and dislikes.[26] Among fans, the couple of Serena and Ash are known as "AmourShipping" or "SatoSere" which is indirectly also recognized by the staff of The Pokémon Company.[27] So far, Serena has become the first female traveling companion who kissed Ash on the lips.[nb 2][30] It was later revealed that the storyline had been planned by Pokémon X and Y anime director Tetsuo Yajima with producer Shukichi Kanda.[27] However, because the main target audience for the Pokémon anime are children, the kiss scene cannot be shown openly and is intentionally ambiguous with Serena's legs being raised before descending slowly down the escalator, followed by the shocked faces shown by Pikachu, Clemont and Bonnie.[27] An online petition was made by fans in Japan and United States in hopes of bringing Serena to continue her journey with Ash to the Alola region for the Pokémon Sun and Moon series, although it did not succeed in influencing the producer's decision.[31][32] In a survey conducted by Netorabo Japan in 2021, Serena ranks first in the Pokémon anime girls, which fans like the most.[33]
On the other hand, the depiction of the character Serena in the anime is considered excessive. Scott Wilson of Sora News wrote that it was strange to see the kiss scene between Serena and Ash, especially since Ash himself was 'stuck' at 10 years old during the Pokémon anime from 1997,[nb 3] and for the Pokémon anime itself the addition of the scene was a bit disgusting.[35] Allegra Frank from Polygon criticized the depiction of Ash's face after being kissed on the lips by Serena, with Ash still not understanding anything about the moment.[36] Levana Jane from Game Rant wrote that Serena's character was developed in a different way in the anime from the previous female characters in order to meet the audience's expectations of a 'stylish young woman'. But this can only be fulfilled in Pokémon Sun and Moon through the characters Lana, Lillie, and Mallow.[37]
There was also disappointment from some viewers of the anime series when Serena was reappeared in Pokémon Journeys after previously receiving warm responses, especially when looking at her appearance which is now described as an adult girl while on the other side Ash's character is still maintained as a children.[38] In addition, the reunion between Serena and Ash which was very short was also considered not to meet the audience's expectations.[18][38]
Merchandise[edit]
Serena's popularity makes her featured in various merchandise, among them in is a music box that was released in a limited edition by Bandai in 2016.[39] She also made a plush doll that was released in Japan in 2020 wearing outfit like in a video game.[40]
Serena also appears in the form of an action figure made by Kotobukiya with an appearance like in a video game.[41] In addition, other action figures were also made by Megahouse by taking appearances from the Pokemon XYZ anime.[42] Along with Misty, May, Dawn and Iris, Serena was also made into a chibi mini-figure which was released by Takara Tomy.[43]
In addition, a special card about Serena was released as part of the Pokémon Trading Card Game's Incandescent Arcana series.[44]

- ↑ In the anime, Serena is depicted as 10 years old. While in video games, Serena's age is 16 years old.[34]
