Sergey Yevgenievich Shalunov (Russian: Сергей Евгеньевич Шалунов; born July 22, 1969 in Cheboksary) — is a Russian racing car driver and Candidate Master of Sports of Russia[1] in motor racing.

General information[edit]

Sergey Shalunov was born on July 22, 1969 in Cheboksary, capital of the Chuvash Republic (Russian Federation). He graduated from the General Education School No. 1 in Cheboksary and then the I.N. Uliyanov Chuvash State University obtaining a Diploma in Engineering.

Yevgeniy Shalunov, Sergey Shalunov’s father, is a famous scientist and Nina Shalunova, Sergey Shalunov’s mother, is a patent counsel of the Russian Federation.

Sergey is married to Yekaterina Gavrilik, citizen of the Republic of Belarus. He has two daughters.

Sergey Shalunov is the Chairman of the Management Board of the ‘Chuvash Automobile Federation’[2] Public Moto Racing Organization of the Chuvash Republic. During his free time, the racer goes mountain skiing and cycling.

Sergey Shalunov has won 11 ‘golden’ cups, 12 ‘silver’ cups and 7 ‘bronze’ cups. The wide list of prizes keeps increasing. The life of Sergey Shalunov consists in regular trainings in gyms and practical activities on international car-racing tracks, as is right and proper for a racing car driver.

Sports Career[edit]

Sergey Shalunov first got behind the wheel when he was 7, under the guidance of Boris Smolentsev, his grandfather. Sergey read each article related to motor racing that were published in ‘Za Rulem’ magazine that at that time was the only magazine in the country devoted to this topic. He also knew the names of all Formula-1 pilots and rally participants. However Sergey himself joined the high-scale motor sport much later. Sergey’s youth concurred with the Perestroika era. The collapse of the USSR and the shocking 90s followed. Sergey Shalunov became an efficient manager and successful businessman. Sergey participated in traditional rally in Chuvashia, and became the winner as per the general and team ratings. But his main job was preventing him from doing motor sport at a serious level. Anyway, thanks to his friends, Sergey participated in the Russian Circuit Racing Cup as a member of Lada scoring group. Viktor Alexandrovish Shapovalov, the famous World Championship touring pilot (WTCC), became his co-driver and tutor. As a result of the first season Sergey Shalunov ranked fifth.

During the 2012 season, Sergey raced for the Arloid Racing team in the Lada Granta Russian Cup and the Russian Championship, Touring Light group. In the Lada Granta Cup, Shalunov drove the powerful Lada Granta Sport, equipped with a turbine engine (1600 cm³, 240 h.p.). In the Championship, he drove Lada Kalina R2B (1600 cm³, 180 h.p.). He hit the podium in both series. In the Russian Cup, Sergey and his co-driver Viktor Antonov won a race in Smolensk Ring. As a result Sergey ranked 4th in the Lada Granta Cup during that season. In the Touring Light group Sergey only ranked 9th as during the last two rounds his car didn’t reach the finish line in each of the four races due to technical problems.

In 2013 Sergey Shalunov receives an invitation to join Syzran Racing Team. The team raced in the Lada Granta and National groups of the Russian Championship. Mikhail Mityayev, the Champion of Russia, became Sergey’s co-driver in the Lada Granta group. As of the end of the season, Syzran Racing Team won the Cup in the Lada Group as per the team rating, while Sergey Shalunov ranked 3rd as per his individual rating. That was a tough season for the pilot as during one of the races he injured his hand. In 2014, Sergey Shalunov participated in the final round of the Radical Middle East Cup 2013/14, driving the fast Radical SR3 RS. During the same year the pilot participated in three rounds of the Russian Circuit Racing Cup, Super Production group, driving Lada Granta Sport. As a result of all the three races, including the Sochi Racing Track, Sergey hit the podium. In autumn, Sergey Shalunov participated in the Radical Middle East Cup 2014/15. As a result of his participation in the group of super-fast prototypes, he won two titles of the Middle East Vice Champion of the season. His team also won the 2014/15 season and in the season 2014/15 he won the ‘Best Racer of the Season’ title that was presented to him on the legendary Formula 1 track Yas Marina International Circuit.
