Seth Levine is an American businessperson. Levine is the co-founder of the Foundry Group, and has previously worked for Mobius Venture Capital, FirstWorld Communications, ICG Communications, and Morgan Stanley.

Career[edit]

Levine started his career as an investment analyst in Morgan Stanley's telecom and media group.[1] He later worked for ICG Communications, eventually running their corporate development group.[2] He then joined FirstWorld Communications, where he was one of the first three employees of the restart of the business in 1998.[3] Levine led the company's IPO in March 2000. In total the IPO raised over $260 million.[4] In 2001 Levine left FirstWorld to join Mobius Venture Capital.[5]

In 2007 Levine, along with Brad Feld, Jason Mendelson and Ryan McIntyre, founded Foundry Group[6] to focus on investing in early-stage technology companies.[7] The firm, based in Boulder, Colorado,[8] closed its first fund with $225 million in committed capital in late 2007. Foundry raised similar $225 million funds in 2010,[9] 2013 and 2016 as well as separate funds to invest in later-stage companies in 2013 and 2016.[10] Levine is a managing director of the firm,[11] and sits on the boards of a number of their investment companies.[12]

Levine has been cited in the media regarding investing in local companies versus ones in other jurisdictions,[13] and on the potential of various start-up companies in terms of scale.[14] He has also discussed the interaction between CEOs and their boards.[15] As a writer, Levine composes guest blog posts on business issues,[16][17] both on his own VC Adventure blog,[18] and as a contributor to Business Insider.[19] The VC Adventure blog has been named one of the top ten blogs by venture capitalists by TechCrunch.[20]

Personal life[edit]

Levine attended Macalester College, graduating in 1994 with degrees in both Economics and Psychology. He currently serves as a Trustee of the college.[21][22] Levine is married to his wife Greeley Sachs.[23] Levine co-founded Pledge 1%, an organization that encourages companies and people in the startup community to give back to local charities.[24] In politics, Levine has served as a campaign chair for local electoral races and has been involved in races at the local and national levels.[25]
