Setiawangsa-Pantai Expressway (SPE),
, is under construction and one of the expressways in Klang Valley, Malaysia. The 29.8 km (18.5 mi) expressway connects Taman Melati near
Kuala Lumpur Middle Ring Road 2 Klang Gates exit to
Kerinchi Link near Pantai and University of Malaya. The alignment of Setiawangsa-Pantai Expressway will traverse north to south of Kuala Lumpur and will serve areas such as University Tunku Abdul Rahman, Wangsa Maju, Setiawangsa, Ampang, the Tun Razak Exchange & Bandar Malaysia development corridor and Kerinchi. It was built and maintained by Ekovest Berhad. It is formerly known as DUKE Phase 3 using
but later changed. [1]
The Setiawangsa-Pantai Expressway is expected to provide an alternative route for road users with improved and more efficient traffic dispersal system in the area around Kuala Lumpur city center to complement and relieve peak hour congestion on existing arterial roads and expressways along its proposed alignment. The Setiawangsa-Pantai Expressway is also expected to improve connectivity with existing expressways and public rail transportation systems such as the KTM Komuter, LRT and MRT lines and providing a holistic transport system to support the development and modernization of Greater Kuala Lumpur. [2]
Route background
The expressway is under construction but some sections are to open up gradually. All sections of this expressway are elevated. Once completed, it will have 7 interchanges and a few toll plazas. It is a dual-two carriageway with 4 lanes (2 lanes on either bound). It is constructed according to JKR R6 design standards being defined in the Arahan Teknik 8/86: A Guide on Geometric Design of Roads (controlled-access expressway with design speed limit of 120 km/h and lane width of 3.5 m) [3]
History
It is formerly known as DUKE Phase 3 using
as part of the DUKE Extension Expressway Project but upon construction it was changed to a different name and uses
instead.[4] On 12 April 2021, the expressway was given a title in the Malaysia Book Of Records for 2 categories: the longest prestressed T-shape concrete bridge and longest T-shaped prestressed concrete beam. There are 424 BH beams used and the longest bridge that used the BH Girder is 67.5 meters long. [5][6]
Features
- The whole main link of the expressway will not be on the ground and is elevated entirely.
- Starting at Kampung Pandan, the expressway will be a double-decker flyover.
- All toll plazas are elevated.
Controversy
- Jalan U-Thant residents filed a lawsuit claiming the expressway built next to their houses disregards the impact on their health and well-being with the increased noise levels and air pollution. [1]
- A Facebook page was created protesting against the construction claiming many reasons the expressway is bad for a lot of aspects. [2]
