Academic Performance[edit]

Ofsted's September 2021 inspection rated the Primary school as 'Good'[1].The 2019 S.A.T.S Progress score in reading, writing and maths all fall 'below average' (-1.8, -2.5, -2.7) in accordance to the Gov UK[2]. No more recent scores have been publicly released (as of May 2022), most likely due to COVID-19 pandemic.

History[edit]

According to the school's website[3], it was originally founded in 1928 as an infant and junior school before becoming a lower school in 1974/75. The school used to have separate entrances for boys and girls and set-in-stone signs of these can (possibly used to) be seen on the two outer 'pillars' of the front school gates.

Shackleton Primary School became the Primary school it is today in 2013, however they have redone and updated multiple features of the school in 2021; moving the original entrance inside the original building (est. 25m from front gates) to a closer entrance inside one of the new-builds. They have also added some questionable gate system which surprised many past members of the school.

Mrs Anne Parish was the head teacher in (and possibly before) 2014, and remained so until around early 2018 when she retired. During her time as head teacher she made sure to organise an annual school-fate and lots of fun and exciting trips for the students going there, such as trips to Sherwood Forest, Science Museum, London and Warwick Castle amongst others. The school also did some more local trips to Bedford, such as performing at the Bedford Corn Exchange and visiting local Churches, Mosques and Gurdwaras.

Soon after Mrs Anne Parish retired (speculation suggests that she partly left due to), Shackleton Primary School joined the HEART Academies Trust[4]. Due to this, many teachers began to leave to school for personal reasons or disagreements with the school.

Leadership is something many would say the school struggled with during the 2018-2019 time period, as within this time the school had 3 temporary head teachers, such as Mr Slater (a senior deputy at the school). Despite this, the school continued to do their annual Kingswood[5], Norfolk for the year 6's until the last one took place in September 2019. Since the move to the HEART Academies Trust[4], less trips have taken place.

Shackleton Primary School Today[edit]

As of 2020, the head teacher has been Mr Andy George.

On the website the school claims to now have two halls and a dance studio, which are recent editions which weren't there in 2020. The primary school also claims to have recently refurbished classrooms and fully-interactive whiteboards; something the main school of the Heart Academies Trust[4], Bedford Academy does not have.
