Early life
Artist Shadananan Anikkath was born at “Anikkath Tharavadu - Thachankonam Kalam” of Thathamangalam, Chittur taluk (Palakkad) in Kerala[1] to late Kumaran Nair and late Ammaluamma as their sixth child in an agricultural family.[2][dead link]
After schooling at Chittur, Shadananan went to Mumbai British Institute of Commerce, where he successfully completed his Diploma in Commercial Arts and, along with this, attended an electrical wiring course at Dadar Institute. Then he continued his studies at Madras School of Fine Arts for an Integrated Diploma in Fine Arts and painting. The Madras campus also gifted him with sculpturing, but he couldn’t continue there because he had to return to his village to look after the family agriculture.[2][dead link]

During his school days, he was influenced and inspired by his drawing teachers.[2][dead link] During college, he became a hardcore fan of Vincent Van Gogh.[2][dead link] Shadananan began his career as a painter, installation artist and sculptor in the late 1960s. In 1964, he took the initiative to start the Palakkad Chithrakala Parishath[2][dead link] which conducted a number of seminars and classes on painting, later becoming a centre of excellence. Later, Shadananan expanded his métier into the world of landscape installations. A number of his famous installations are found in parks and gardens in and around Palakkad.[2][dead link] He started and published the Malayalam magazine 'Suhruth-സുഹൃത്ത് ' along with his friend Chembakassery Viswam as editor at Chittur. For the first time in Malayalam, he used the Wood cut printing in the magazine.[2][dead link] The magazine printed the initial stories of Maythil Radhakrishnan and even the poem "Kuraththi- കുറത്തി " of Kadammanitta.
Shadananan is very active in the sociocultural activities of Palakkad. He headed or became a member of many art related groups in Palakkad. In 2010, he was nominated a member of the Kerala Folklore Akademi and the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi (General Council Members constituted as per G.O.(Rt) No.210/10/CAD dated 29.3.2010).[3][2][4][5][6] He is a living encyclopedia of folklore arts in Palakkad and surroundings (Ancient Valluvanad).
