shadowplay is a play written by Rachel Garnet. The play will premiere on November 23, 2018, at the Access Theatre in New York City.

Summary and characters[edit]

The play is an immersive experience in which audience members interact with author J.M. Barrie and the characters from his novel, Peter Pan.

The play opens in Barrie's study, where audience members read from Barrie's novel Peter Pan. Soon after, Peter Pan and his friend, Wendy Darling (along with their shadows), arrive, and Peter urges Barrie to take his audience to Neverland.

Once to Neverland, the audience is split into three groups. Peter leads his audience members to a fairy forest, Wendy to a mermaid lagoon, and Barrie to a native camp. Afterward, the group reconvenes. The lights go out, and the audience is once more split into three groups.

Barrie's journey[edit]

Barrie encounters a dinner party, hosted by his wife Mary Ansell. Ansell attempts to be intimate with Barrie, but he runs from the room, disturbed. He has another encounter with Peter Pan, who is dressed in a jacket, and his mother, Margaret Barrie.

Wendy's journey[edit]

Wendy marries and has a daughter named Jane.

Peter's journey[edit]

Margaret Barrie mistakenly calls Peter "David" and gives him a jacket. Barrie enters and is disturbed by Peter's attire. Margaret reenters and embraces Barrie's shadow, taking Peter's jacket and giving it to the shadow.

Ending[edit]

The groups reconvene in a cemetery, where they encounter Captain Hook. Hook reveals that the spirits of the graveyard are victims of Barrie, and Barrie's shadow is revealed to be his brother David, who had died in a childhood ice skating accident. Barrie flees from the scene, while Peter defeats Hook in a duel.

Back in Barrie's study, Peter reminds Barrie that there is good in the world. He then joins hands with Barrie's shadow and departs.
