Shafa-ur-Rehman Khan is an Indian activist leader known for his role in Citizenship Amendment Act protests.[1] He is also President of Alumni Association of Jamia Millia Islamia (AAJMI).

Early life and education[edit]

Shafa-ur-Rehman Khan was born in village Sathla Meerut district, Uttar Pradesh. His father was landlord of village and he owned acres of agriculture land, while mother is a house wife. He moved to Delhi at a young age and did his schooling from Jamia Millia Islamia. He pursued his master's degree in commerce from Jamia Millia Islamia. Rehman lives in Jamia Nagar, New Delhi. Along with his family occupation Rehman is a business man by profession.[2]

Political activism[edit]

Shafa-ur-Rehman contested Alumni Association of Jamia Millia Islamia election in the year 2018 and he became the first elected president of AAJMI. He was actively involved in the anti CAA, NRC protest going on Jamia Millia Islamia gate no.7 and strongly supported the student fraternity.[3][2]

Arrest and prison[edit]

On 27 April 2020 Rehman was arrested during the Covid-19 lockdown, while he was engaged in relief work of North East Delhi riot affected areas, for allegedly conspiring to incite communal violence during the 2020 Delhi Riots.[4] According to the Delhi police the violence was a pre-planned conspiracy and all arrests have been made based on scientific and forensic evidence. Rehman was booked under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) by Delhi Police. [5]

According to the special cell of Delhi it was a pre-meditated conspiracy which led to Delhi riots just before the visit to India of the United States President Donald Trump on 24–25 February 2020. The Police have made FIR. The court on 13 August 2020, has given the police time until 17 September to file the charge sheet.[6]
