Early life and education
Career
Jeste joined the faculty of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA in 2010, where she directed the biomarkers core of the UCLA Center for Autism Research and Treatment and developed the Care and Research in Neurogenetic Syndromes (CARING) clinical program.[1][2]
Research
Jeste's research seeks brain-based markers of autism that appear in infancy, before behavioral symptoms emerge, with the goal of enabling earlier diagnosis and intervention.[2] Her studies of infants with tuberous sclerosis complex, a genetic condition associated with a high likelihood of autism, integrated EEG biomarkers with behavioral measures to characterize atypical development and led to the first randomized controlled trial of an early behavioral intervention in that population.[2][1]
Jeste has also commented publicly on evidence standards in autism treatment. In 2026, she told NPR that federal promotion of leucovorin as an autism treatment had burdened clinicians and families with poorly supported claims, and argued that prescribing the drug in response to publicity rather than evidence would set a harmful precedent.[3]
Service
Jeste serves on the boards of directors of the American Brain Foundation, the National Organization for Rare Disorders, and the International Society for Autism Research.[4] In 2008, while in Boston, she co-founded ACEing Autism, a nonprofit that runs tennis programs for children with autism; the organization received the United States Tennis Association's Adaptive Tennis Community Service Award in 2014 and operates program locations across the United States.[5][6]
