Shamshera (English: Sword) is an upcoming Indian Hindi film directed by Karan Malhotra and produced by Aditya Chopra under the banner of Yash Raj Films. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor and Vaani Kapoor in lead roles, with Sanjay Dutt playing the antagonist.[1] The film is expected to be released in late 2019.
Cast
- Ranbir Kapoor as Shamshera[2][3]
- Vaani Kapoor[4]
- Sanjay Dutt[5]
Production
Development
The project was initially announced in May 2018.[6] The film marks the first collaboration between all three actors and is also the first collaboration ever between Dutt and Yash Raj studios. [7] In an interview, Kapoor revealed that the film is a "wonderful action, thriller, adventure movie set in 1800. It’s about a Daaku (dacoit) tribe and their fight for justice from the Bristish for getting what they deserve back.”[8]
Casting
Director Karan Malhotra revealed that Vaani Kapoor was casted as Kapoor's romantic interested. He stated that Vaani is a "perfect fit" for her role and is "absolutely fresh". Actor Ranbir Kapoor stated that Shamshera is "exactly" the type of "Hindi commercial cinema" he was looking for and will take him out of his "comfort zone".[9] Malhotra also revealed that Kapoor's character "Shamshera is a highly ferocious and fearless character in the film" therefore his nemesis would have to be "even more fierce and monumental in every aspect" and thus casted Dutt opposite Kapoor believing he would be able to convey that level of "impact" to the audience.[10]
Filming
The first schedule of filming is expected to begin in late 2018 and the film is to be completed by mid 2019.[11]
