Shantha Gunaratne (Sinhala: ශාන්ත ගුණරත්න) is a photo artist, a writer, and a photography instructor in Sri Lanka. He started photography in 1985 as a member of the Photographic Society of Royal College, Colombo 07.[1][2][3] He has won more than a hundred numbers of Medals, Awards, and merit certificates from international and local competitions and qualified as Artiste FIAP (AFIAP) of The International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP Profile: FP-1497678).[4][5] Shantha is a National Artiste (Photographer – S. No. 02322) registered under the Department of Cultural Affairs[6] Gunaratne has been serving as an NVQ Assessor for Photographer (CBA/1109/2011)[7] from the year 2011 at the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission (TVEC)
Biography[edit]
Early life[edit]
Shantha Gunaratne was born on 10 July 1967 at Kiribathgoda, Kelaniya Electorate, Gampaha District, Western Province, Sri Lanka. His father Siriman Gunaratne was a civil servant at the Ceylon Administrative Service (CAS), served as an Assistant Government Agent (AGA), and an Assistant Secretary to the Ministry of Home Affairs from the 1970s to the early 1990s. Gunaratne's father was also an author of several books and published paper articles mainly on heroic characters of Sri Lanka. Shantha's mother Chandralatha Wanigasundara Manike was a housewife and a caring mother who was the strength behind the success of Shantha and his four siblings. Gunaratne had his preliminary education from Kumara Primary School, now Presidents College at Mahara, Kadawatha, Sri Lanka. He had passed grade five scholarship and entered, Royal College, Colombo 7 in 1979. Shantha had his secondary education there and sat for the G.C.E. Advanced Level in BioScience in 1986. In 1985, Gunaratne got the membership of the Photographic Society of Royal College [1] and learned the basics of photography, and started his photography endeavor.
Higher education[edit]
Shantha got through the First Examination in Science (GSQ) and studied B.Sc. in BioScience at the University of Peradeniya as an external candidate. While doing the science degree, he got his first job at Coconut Research Institute and couldn't complete it. Later he got his Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts (B.A. Hons.) including Image Arts as a subject from the University of Kelaniya. Gunaratne also completed a three-year Diploma in Photography at the National Photographic Art Society of Sri Lanka (NPAS),[8] in 2002. Afterward, Shantha had been awarded the Associate Membership (ANPAS) in 2006, Fellowship (FNPAS)[9] in 2011, and Honorary Fellowship (Hon. FNPAS)[10] in 2013 too. Shantha was qualified as Artiste FIAP (AFIAP), a distinction offered by the Federation of International Photographic Art (FIAP) in 2018 (FIAP Profile: FP-1497678).
Personal life[edit]
Shantha married Ruvini in 2000, who is a Dental Surgeon and they have two sons, Nadil and Nadev still studying at Royal College, Colombo which he also had his secondary education. Gunaratne's eldest sister is an Ayurveda Doctor, second sister is a Lawyer and his only brother Uditha Gunaratne is a stage drama, film, and teledrama actor and a social activist who mainly involved in child welfare, drug addiction and HIV-AIDS prevention.

Early career[edit]
Shantha joined Coconut Research Institute (CRI) at Lunuwila in 1993 as a Technical Assistant on a contract basis, under the Ph.D. project on Soil and Water Management of Prof. Lal P. Vidhana Arachchi[11] who is a Professor now at Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka, and became a permanent TA in 1995 at Soils and Plant Nutrition Division.
While doing his job a little far away from home, Gunaratne started a small business, Sakuna Communication at Mahara, Kadawatha in 1995 and converted it to a Photographic Studio in 1999. After this business started growing, Shantha resigned from his job at CRI in 1996 and fully involved with the business. When Shantha's wife Ruvini got her first appointment as a Government Dental Surgeon in 2003 at the District Hospital in Kobeigane, which is a small rural town, 125 km away from Colombo and his residence, he had to move with the family. He closed his Studio at Mahara and started a new one, Shamal Studio at Kobeigane with a friend who resided in that area as his partner. After three years, in 2006 Shantha had to move back to Colombo with his wife's transfer to the Colombo Dental Institute and fully handed over Shamal Studio to his partner Nimal Yapa.
Photography career[edit]
Shantha started his photography career as a member of the Royal College Photographic Society[1] in 1985. His first camera was a second hand Petri Computor II rangefinder. Shantha bought his first SLR, Minolta SRT 303b in 1995. While doing photography as a hobby at the beginning, he had started event coverage. Gunaratne did his first Wedding Photography assignment of a friend in 1991 by using a borrowed camera and accessories from another friend's brother, Keerthi Amarasekara who was then working as a photographer for a leading newspaper.
To become a photographer as a profession, Shantha wanted to buy a brand new camera and a flashgun and study photography in a proper way. So he bought a Nikon FM2 Camera and a Metz 60 CT1 Professional Flash in 1999. And joined the National Photographic Art Society of Sri Lanka [8], in 2000, completed the three-year photography diploma in 2002. While following the above course, mainly art photography, Shantha had improved his wedding photography skills. He also participated in numerous photography workshops conducted by leading photographic institutions and societies. After participating in the three-day residential Wedding Photography in Practice workshop held in Bandarawela, Gunaratne won Fujifilm Bridal Photographer of the Year 2001[12] title and three Merits out of ten at the competition followed by the above workshop organized by the Institute of Sri Lankan Photographers and Hayleys Photoprint Ltd. Shantha also became the 1st Runner up of Bridal Couple Section at Sunsilk Hair and Beauty Fair 2004 competition organized by Sri Lanka Association of Hairdressers and Beauticians (SLAHAB). Gunaratne also won Three Places out of Top Ten Advanced Portraitures at the competition followed by the three-day workshop on Advanced Portraiture organized by the Institute of Sri Lankan Photographers in collaboration with Hayleys Photo Print Limited in February 2002, conducted at the Galle Face Hotel, Colombo.

Awards in art photography[edit]
Gunaratne won his first Merit Certificate in photography at the Youth Awards 1999,[18] organized by the National Youth Services Council. After joining the National Photographic Art Society of Sri Lanka, Shantha had won Monthly competitions and special trophies of the society and won 5 Trophies in the three-year study period. Most of the photographs created by Shantha were black and white and printed by himself using the darkroom, which was his bedroom converted to one at night.
When Shantha was in the second year of the NPAS course, he started participating in Open sections at national level competitions and international competitions. Gunaratne won the Gold Medal in the Colour section at the 45th International Exhibition organized by the Photographic Society of Sri Lanka (PSSL).[19] in 2000. He won two first places in B&W open sections at main annual competitions organized by Upcountry Photographic Society, Kandy, and Kurunegala Photographic Society in 2001. Shantha also won Silver Medal in the Monochrome section at the 46th International Exhibition in 2001 and another Silver Medal and Bronze Medal in the Monochrome section at the 48th International Exhibition in 2003 organized by the Photographic Society of Sri Lanka (PSSL).[19]
Gunaratne won an Honourable Mention Gold Medal at the 75th International Photographic Salon of Japan – Asahi Shimbun[20] in 2014. Salon Silver Medal in Monochrome Section at the 1st Circular Exhibition of Photography, DPW WMC CIRCUIT 2016[21] held in Serbia. Sri Lanka National 2nd Prize at SONY World Photography Awards 2017,[22] Japan, and received a SONY Alpha 7 II Camera and a Lens. 2nd Place of the 2nd Sanmenxia White Swan International Photography Competition,[23][24] which is a live competition held in China in December 2017. IAAP Bronze Medal - Monochrome - 11th International Photography Competition - Konya Culture & Tourism Directorate - Turkey – 2017.[25] Gunaratne achieved the title, Bronze Exhibitor of Asia Photo Festival (BEAPF)[26] organized by the Asia Photographers Union in 2020.

Solo exhibitions[edit]
Gunaratne held his first solo photographic exhibition, Reflex on 31 December 2010 and 1 January 2011 at the Public Library Exhibition Hall, Colombo to celebrate 25 years in photography. Held his 2nd Solo Photographic Exhibition, www. photography - Wild Wedding Works-of-art as a Virtual Online Exhibition,[28] which is comprised of Wildlife, Wedding and Creative Art Photographs, from 28th December 2020 to celebrate 35 years in photography.
Academic career[edit]
Instructor[edit]
Shantha is conducting lectures in photography at the National Photographic Art Society of Sri Lanka (NPAS) since 2003. He was a visiting instructor of One Year Photography Diploma conducted by the Image Arts Unit of University of Kelaniya (2007–2013)[29] and a Visiting Lecturer of BA Honours Degree of the Image Arts Unit of University of Kelaniya (2013).[30] Shantha is conducting lectures in photography for the diploma in journalism (Part-Time) course at the Sri Lanka College of Journalism[31] from 2018 to date. He is the Coordinator of the One Year National Diploma in Digital Photography conducted by the Sri Lanka Foundation[32] from 2018 to date.
Gunaratne also conducted the six-month course in photography at Galle District chamber of commerce and Industries from September 2011 to March 2012. Conducted three month course on digital photography at projects abroad - NGO in Colombo from November 2010 to January 2011. Conducted a 3 Month Course on Digital Photography for the Media Unit Staff Members of MAGA Construction from August to October 2013. Shantha is the Instructor of the Royal College Photographic Society from 2014 to date. Shantha started the Academy of Digital Photography (AODP)[33] in 2009, which is an institution mainly focused on Photography Education, and he is the Coordinator and the Instructor of AODP. Gunaratne has been continuously involved in training and conducted workshops, seminars, courses, and practical sessions organized by various government and non-government institutions and photographic societies since 2003.[34][35][33]
NVQ assessor[edit]
Gunaratne has been serving as an NVQ Assessor for Photographer (CBA/1109/2011) from the year 2011 at the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission (TVEC) under the Ministry of Skills Development, Vocational Education, Research & Innovations. Shantha has already assessed 24 candidates so far. He also served several times as a member of the Standards Revising Committee for NVQ Level 4 standards for the title Photographer at the National Apprentice & Industrial Training Authority of Sri Lanka (NAITA).
Literature[edit]
Shantha published his first photography book Black & White Photography (Sinhala: කලුසුදු ඡායාරූප ශිල්පය)[36][37] in 2019 and also published two Digital Photography magazines.[38] He has published more than 75 written and translated Articles on Photography in printed publications, magazines and newspapers[39][40] and also on websites and blogs.[41][42][43][44][45][46] Gunaratne has been serving as a Member of the Editorial Panel and the Editorial coordinator of the Lanka Camera, magazine which is the main photography magazine in Sri Lanka, and some other publications by the National Photographic Art Society of Sri Lanka.
Activist[edit]
Gunaratne is an activist in photography and served as the Director - Publications from 2007 to 2010, Director - Development in 2010–2011, Director - Executive in 2011–2012 and 2015–2016 of the National Photographic Art Society of Sri Lanka (NPAS). He also served as a Member of the State Panel of Photographic Art under the Arts Council of Sri Lanka from 2013 to 2016 and the General Secretary of the Photographic Federation of Sri Lanka in 2011/2012. Shantha was the Assistant Secretary of the Wildlife Trust Photographic Association in 2016/2017. He is also a founder member and an Advisor of the Kelani Photographic Art Society.

Shantha has served as a member of selection panels in competitions and exhibitions organized by Photographic societies, universities, school societies, and government institutions. He also participated as the Chief Guest of some of the above competitions and Exhibitions and delivered Keynote Addresses too.[49]
Gunaratne also has participated in several Television programs as a resource. He expressed his views at Charana TV's 2-hour feature Programme Livisari Premaya – Art of Photography[50] as a senior academic on 28th July 2020. He also participated as a resource at the Knowledge First -Friday programs of the Rupavahini National Television from September 2018 to February 2019.
Layout designer[edit]
Gunaratne is a book layout designer and has designed more than 15 books, magazines and catalogs. Among them there are 8 books by Dr. Uditha Gayashan Gunasekara,[51][52] who is a Senior Lecturer at the Drama and Theatre and Image Arts Unit at the Department of Fine Arts of University of Kelaniya, who has published more than 15 books so far. Shantha's own book Black & White Photography (Sinhala: කලුසුදු ඡායාරූප ශිල්පය).
Collector[edit]
Gunaratne owns a collection of cameras,[53] stamps,[54] currency and coins[55] and books.[56] He bought a Linhof Technika Large Format Camera complete kit, a Rolleiflex 2.8 F - White-face TLR Medium Format camera, and a Rolleiflex 3.5 F TLR Medium Format camera from an auction held at Coconut Research Institute in 1995 and started collecting old cameras as an additional hobby, and now has a collection of more than 60 old cameras and accessories. At that time, he was already a collector of Stamps, Currency, Coins and Books. Shantha has some stamps that belonged to the British colonial era. He also has some VOC Dutch coins and early British coins, 1/48 Rix-dollar equals One Stiver (Sinhala: තුට්ටුව) started circulation in 1802 and another One Stiver started circulation in 1815 in British Ceylon. Shantha also has a collection of photography books, novels, and translations, and some old books from his father's collection.
