Sharmarke Abdinasir Mohamed, better known by his stage name Sharma Boy, is a Somali rapper, singer, songwriter, and dancer based in the Horn of Africa. His musical practice melds traditional Somali poetry and Somali musical influences with his own unique hip-hop and rap style.

Personal life[edit]

Sharma Boy was born in 1999 in the town of Burtinle in the northeast region of the Puntland of Somalia. As a child, he accompanied his mother to the capital, Mogadishu, after his parents separated. He entered the Holy Quran Madrasa, and completed his primary school education. His family experiences cconomic hardship while he was in high school.[1]

Career[edit]

When Sharma Boy left school, he started working in various jobs as a technician by working in a garage and a small bakery company.[2][3]

From 2000 to 2010, Somalia experiences economic chaos and political turmoil. The country has not had a strong central government since the 1991 civil war.[4] Mogadishu has been a battleground for tribal militias and extremist groups, and the drought has killed many people.[5]

In 2020, at the age of 20, Sharma Boy started making songs about the daily lives of Somali people and published them on YouTube, becomign popular with Somali viewers.[6]

In his 2020 song "Shahadada Micno Maleh" with Salim Kaskeey, Sharma Boy comments on the social problems in the country, such as unemployment, poverty, and corruption.[7]

Sharma Boy's songs explore social issues in Somalia and include messages of peace, love and unity. Sharma Boy is a full-time artist and has performed in Somalia, Kenya, Djibouti, Ethiopia and the USA to the tune of tens of thousands of Somalis. The President of Djibouti, Ismail Omar Gelle, recently honored Sharma Boy with an award for his art and activism.[8] Many people consider him to be the most influential Somali artist of this century.[9]

Sharma Boy joined YouTube in October 2019 with 1.77 million subscribers, and more than 400 million views across his songs.[10] His song "Caga Dhigo, released in 2023, charted his success and got 23 million views. Sharma Boy has also collaborated with Hollywood star K'naan on two singles that have been watched by tens of millions of people on his platform.[11]

Sharma Boy to Minneapolis[edit]

In 2018, Adrienne Dorn, executive director of the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches, started working with WBAC Founder Ahmed Ismail, who’s known as Coach Ahmed. Soon after, Dorn noticed that WBAC’s annual soccer event is very, very popular.[12]

Inviting Somali entertainers to the state is a familiar story in Minnesota Dorn spent 13 years working at The Cedar Cultural Center, where she led projects that brought several classical Somali singers to Minneapolis, including Abdulkadir “Jubba” Omar Yusuf, Maryan Mursal, and Nimco Yasin.[13]
