The Sharp PC-G850V is a pocket computer made by Sharp. It is possibly the last model of its kind and, like its predecessor models, was produced for the Japanese education market. It is the direct successor to the Sharp PC-G850S and belongs to a line of pocket computers with Z80 processors that began with the PC-E200. The PC-G850V has an alphanumeric keyboard and a graphic LC display with 144 × 48 pixels, on which six lines of text can be displayed and which offers a higher contrast than the previous models. An 8 MHz Z80-compatible processor is used as the CPU.
Equipped with all the usual functions, the device can be used like a scientific pocket calculator. In addition, programs can be written in the programming languages BASIC, C, CASL and Z80-assembler, which can be stored in the integrated 32 KB static RAM. C and assembler programs are created in a text editor (TEXT mode) and can then be compiled or assembled. A simple hex monitor can be accessed from the BASIC system, which also provides a print function and the option of loading or sending machine programs via the serial interface. When compiling C programs, no machine code is generated, but a bytecode, which is then interpreted at runtime. The BASIC interpreter has a relatively extensive set of commands, including graphics and file functions. However, the piezo loudspeaker common in earlier devices is missing for sound generation using BEEP. The connections originally intended for this can be found on the mainboard of the computer.
As a special feature, the 256 KB ROM contains a PICmicro assembler, which enables the programming of PIC processors in connection with additional hardware. The PC-G850V has an 11-pin interface on the left side of the housing, on which classic accessories such as the thermal printer CE-126P can be used. In addition, a serial RS-232 interface with CMOS level is integrated here (as has already been the case since the models of the PC-E2xx series). A USB interface enables data exchange with a PC or Mac up to 9600 baud.
In addition, the interface can be configured as an 8-bit PIO and is also used to connect a PIC burner. A 40-pin system bus is available on the right side of the housing, which enables the connection of optionally available or your own system expansions.
