Shayamal Vallabhjee (born November 26, 1979) is a South African sports scientist, psychologist, author, and performance coach.[1][2][3][4]

Early life and education[edit]

Shayamal Vallabhjee grew up in Tongaat on the East Coast of Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Sports Science from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2002 and later received a master's degree in Psychology from the University of Hertfordshire in 2008.[5] He also completed an MA in Industrial and Organisational Psychology from the Adler University in 2020.[5]

Career[edit]

Vallabhjee began his career as the Indian Cricket Team's Technical Coach in the 2003 Cricket World Cup.[6][7] He spent four years at the International Society for Krishna Consciousness Temple in Chatsworth, Durban, focusing on psychology and spirituality.[8][9]

He has worked with Indian Davis Cup team and Indian Premier League franchises.[7][8][10][11] In 2011, he founded the HEAL Institute, a physiotherapy and rehabilitation chain in Mumbai.[2][12][10][13]

Vallabhjee consults for organizations like Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, the Kenyan Athletics Team, the Indian Olympic Association, and United Nations Youth Forums.[14][15][9] He's authored books like "Breathe Believe Balance: A Guide to Self-discovery and Healing" and "The Handbook of Cricket Drills".[16][17][18][19][20][21]

He has contributed to sports by accompanying teams to major events including the Beijing 2008 Olympics, Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games, Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games, and the 2012 London Olympics.[22][9]

In 2023, Vallabhjee became the sports psychologist for the Indian men's football team, prioritizing players' mental health.[23][24][25][26]

Personal life[edit]

Vallabhjee is an ultra-marathon runner, cyclist, and mountaineer who has participated in nine marathons.[12][8][14] In 2007, he earned a bronze medal at the Comrades Marathon.[2][12][14]

Recognition[edit]

Shayamal Vallabhjee is a four-time TEDx speaker and has received accolades such as the INK Fellowship and Men’s Health Trainer of the Year in 2014, and Asia Spa’s Wellness Guru of 2019.[5][12][27]
