Sheikh Mustafa is from an Islamic scholar family.
He was born in Burao, Somalia. born between 1955 to 1960, and he spent his formative years in a rural area close to Burao.
He completed his primary education in the in the Togdheer region Somalia then enrolled at the German Institute in Burao. He graduated from Somali University in 1980 with a degree in electrical engineering, then he focused on religion. then by the help of islamic scholars who were in Somalia at the time he learned a lot about islam.
He accepted a position as a teacher at the technical school in Burao that Germany had established, but after around 15 months there, Sheikh Mustafa was jailed by the Somali government.
