Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick
Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick is a progressive Democrat running for Congress in Florida's 20th District.[1] In 2018, she became the first Haitian American woman to run for Congress in Broward County, Florida and Palm Beach County, Florida. [2] She lost the 2018 primary election to incumbent Alcee Hastings. [3][4] In 2020, she is facing Hastings again in the Congressional battle for Broward County. [5]
Early life, career, and education[edit]
Sheila is a graduate of Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory and Howard University. She also earned a law degree from St. Thomas University (Florida). Sheila has completed coursework for an MBA at the University of Maryland Global Campus.[6] She is one of the founding members of the Cherfilus & McCormick Foundation. [7]
Sheila has a daughter with a learning disability. In 2017, she married Corlie McCormick. She is the daughter of Haitian immigrants.[8]
Sheila worked as am assistant project manager for New York City Public Transit Authority in the Capital Programs & Environmental Sustainability division.[9] In 1999, Sheila worked for Trinity Health Care Services, Inc. where she was later named Chief Executive Officer and Corporate Counsel.[10] Sheila has lobbied Capital Hill for change in health care reform. She is the CEO of a company that provides home-based continued health care.

Sheila supports limiting hospital and pharmaceutical markups.
Sheila supports fully funding and expanding the Veterans Administration.

Sheila supports Universal Pre-K.
Sheila supports policies that reduce the high cost of tuition.
Sheila supports free public university education.
Sheila supports the ability of non-tenured university employees to unionize.

Sheila supports allowing a Pell Grant to be used for skills training.
Sheila supports linking college accreditation to employment outcomes.
Sheila supports allowing Pell Grants to be used for training the incarcerated.

Sheila opposes the use of private prisons.[15]
