Shengjia Zhao (赵胜嘉; born 1995) is a Chinese–American researcher and engineer specializing in artificial intelligence. Since July 2025, he has served as Chief Scientist at Meta's Superintelligence Lab.[1] Prior to this role, he was a researcher at OpenAI, where he contributed to the development of large language models, including ChatGPT and the GPT-4 series.[2][3][4]
Early life and education
Zhao was born in China in 1995 and later moved to the United States to pursue higher education.[5][6] He earned a degree in computer science from Stanford University, focusing on machine learning and artificial intelligence. Following his studies, Zhao continued his research at OpenAI, gaining expertise in large-scale language models and reasoning systems.
Career
Zhao began his career at OpenAI, working on research and development related to transformer-based language models. His efforts included architectural innovations to improve model reasoning and scalability. He contributed to projects leading to the deployment of ChatGPT and subsequent GPT-4 iterations.[7]
In 2025, Meta established the Superintelligence Lab to advance research towards artificial general intelligence.[8] Zhao was appointed Chief Scientist of the lab in July 2025, where he oversees scientific strategy and research direction. His responsibilities include leading work on scalable reasoning systems and foundational models designed for autonomous operation.
Research contributions
Zhao's research includes work on domain-adaptive imitation learning, recognized at conferences such as the International Conference on Learning Representations (ICLR). His studies have addressed uncertainty calibration and generalization in machine learning across varied environments.
During the development of GPT-4 and related models, Zhao contributed to the design of reasoning modules and explored new scaling methods to enhance model capabilities on complex tasks.[9]
Role at Meta
As Chief Scientist of Meta’s Superintelligence Lab, Zhao directs the lab’s research agenda focused on foundational AI technologies. The lab operates independently of Meta's Facebook AI Research (FAIR) division. Zhao reports to senior leadership including Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang.[10]
The lab focuses on creating models capable of scalable reasoning and building upon advances in natural language processing and machine learning.
Impact and context
Zhao's appointment reflects Meta's strategic investment in artificial intelligence research. The creation of the Superintelligence Lab aligns with industry-wide efforts to develop large-scale AI models and pursue general intelligence capabilities.
Awards
Zhao received the Outstanding Paper Award at the International Conference on Learning Representations (ICLR) in 2022 for his work on domain-adaptive imitation learning, which focused on improving model generalization across diverse environments.[11][12][13]
