Shenhao Wang is an assistant professor and the director of the Urban Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (Urban AI Lab) [1] and Master's program in Urban Analytics at the University of Florida. He is also a research affiliate of Urban Mobility Lab and Media Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Education
Shenhao Wang obtained the first-ever interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Computer and Urban Science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2020. He received a Bachelor of Architecture and B.A. in Law from Tsinghua University in 2011, a B.A. in Economics from Peking University in 2014, and a Master of Science in Transportation and Master of City Planning from MIT in 2017.
Career
Shenhao Wang worked as a research scientist at the Urban Mobility Lab and the Human Dynamics Group of the Media Lab at MIT from 2020 to 2022. He joined the University of Florida as an assistant professor and led AI-related research at the UF Department of Urban and Regional Planning in 2022. He is a faculty affiliate at the Artificial Intelligence Academic Initiative Center. He founded the Urban Artificial Intelligence Lab (Urban AI Lab)[2] and directs the newly-launched Master's program in Urban Analytics at the University of Florida.
Research
Shenhao Wang seeks to develop fundamental theory for urban science using artificial intelligence with three specific research themes.
The first research theme is deep choice theory, which analyzes individual decision-making by integrating discrete choice models and deep learning with applications to individual behavioral analysis in urban mobility. His second research theme is to analyze collective mobility networks by integrating classical network theory and graph neural networks to quantify risk and uncertainty, thus promoting resilient economic growth. His third research theme focuses on ethical urban AI, which seeks to enhance the transparency, accountability, and fairness of urban machine intelligence for broad social impacts.
Dr. Shenhao Wang's research has been funded by U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART) [3], University of Florida, and urban mobility companies.
