Shibu Chacko (born 25 September 1976) is a British-Indian specialist nurse and NHS BT coordinator.[1][2][3]

Early life and career

Shibu Chacko was born in Koothattukulam, India. His career began with training in nursing and then progressed to Advanced Clinical Practitioner, particularly in the areas of chronic disease management and acute care.[4][5] His education initiatives have been integral within the NHS.[6][7][8] His recognition as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) was primarily awarded for his work in Organ Donation awareness within Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities, alongside his volunteering efforts.[9][10][11] Since 2014, he has played a role in encouraging more than 3,000 individuals from BAME backgrounds to register as organ donors.[12][13][14]

In 2018, he created the world's first educational course on Organ Donation for Healthcare Professionals in collaboration with St George's University of London.[15][16] This course has since been endorsed by NHS Blood and Transplant. To date the course has attracted over 8,500 learners from 78 countries.[citation needed][17][18]

He is an advocate for patient-centred care and development within the healthcare sector striving to make a lasting impact on the future of Organ Donation and healthcare in the UK.[19]

Legacy

Chacko was awarded an MBE for his exceptional services in the NHS and for the wider community in the United Kingdom in the 2019 Queen's Birthday Honours announced on 8th June 2019.[20][21] His MBE recognition also reflects his pioneering work in the Organ Donation and Medical Education.[22][23]
