Shilpa Sharma is an Indian businesswoman who is the co-founder and head of product curation and communication at Jaypore, an Indian brand focusing on handcrafted online fashion and home decor. She co-founded Jaypore with Puneet Chawla.[1]

Early life and education

Sharma grew up in a Punjabi household in India.[2] A graduate in Economics from St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, Sharma completed her Masters in Management Studies (MMS) at Welingkar Institute of Management in 1989.[3]

Career

Through her career, Sharma has taken on diverse leadership roles as she worked with various brands such as Cadbury, Marico and FabIndia. She quit her position as Head of Product Development & Buying at FabIndia and went on to independently consult various retail brands and start-ups, providing strategic business advice. At the same time, she also founded Breakaway to curate customized travel experiences for "today's travelers".

She says, “Heading product development and buying for FabIndia, I realized that I was good at driving the business.”[4]

In August 2012, Sharma co-founded Jaypore with Puneet Chawla backed by ₹2 crore in seed funding from Haresh Chawla, partner at True North (formerly India Value Fund Advisors). Jaypore further received $5 million in investments from social venture capital firm Aavishkaar in February 2016, and another $2 million (including convertibles) in 2017.[5] The start-up curates the work of craftsmen, designers and other producers, and works largely on a Sale or Return (SOR) model, showcasing a collection for up to two weeks. It also curates its own in-house label apparel and personal care products.[4] What started off as an exclusive online store is now expanding its presence through brick and mortar stores.[6]

“What prompted us to create a brand like Jaypore was our shared vision of how we could present Indian, craft based designs in a contemporary application, one which would appeal to a domestic and global audience as much.” says Sharma.[4]

Personal life

Sharma’s hobbies include her other business ventures. She has founded Breakaway, a venture which plans and executes bespoke experiential journeys around India. Her latest venture is Mustard (named after the favourite condiment of the Bengali cuisine), a concept restaurant in Goa, that offers Bengali and French Cuisine. Her other hobbies include painting, cooking, reading and photography.[4]
