Heo Su (Korean:허수; born July 22, 2000), better known as Showmaker (stylized as ShowMaker), is a South Korean professional League of Legends player for DWG KIA. Primarily playing as a Mid Laner, he made his professional debut during the 2017 KeSPA Cup.[1] Since his debut he has gone on to be a two time LCK champion[2] and a world champion.[3] Due to his performance at the 2020 World Championship, he is the owner of the DWG Twisted Fate skin.[4]
Career[edit]
2017[edit]
On November 19, 2017, Showmaker was announced to be joining the roster Challengers Korea team DAMWON Gaming alongside Jang "Nuguri" Ha-gwon and Noh "Alive" Jin-wook for the upcoming KeSPA Cup.[1] At KeSPA Cup, DAMWON would eliminate fellow CK team Kongdoo Monster before being eliminated by LCK side Jin Air Green Wings.[5][6]
2018[edit]
Showmaker and DAMWON Gaming finished second in the regular season of CK spring 2018 to qualify for playoffs.[7][8] Despite being the highest ranked regular season team in playoffs, DAMWON would lose 3-1 to Ever8 Winners in the first round.[9] Showmaker would later describe DAMWON's failing to reach the LCK qualifiers as one of the lowest points in his career.[10]
DAMWON Gaming would bounce back from their disappointment in spring playoffs to finish first place in the CK summer season, only dropping a single series and automatically qualifying for the promotion tournament to the LCK.[11] DAMWON would proceed to gain promotion to the LCK after only losing a single game across both of their series played in the promotion tournament. He most notably went 5/3/17 on Katarina, a champion considered to be off-meta at the time, against Team BattleComics.[12]
DAMWON would once again compete in KeSPA Cup where the would face off against SKT Telecom T1 and Showmaker would go against who many consider the best player in the world, Faker. DAMWON would ultimately win the series and increase their expectations heading into the 2019 Spring Split.[13] DAMWON ultimately lost to Griffin in the semifinals.
2019[edit]
Entering the 2019 season DAMWON had very high expectations after defeating SKT and also for being known as nearly unbeatable in their scrimmages against teams from other regions.[14] DAMWON would finish fifth in the regular season and qualify for playoffs where they would be eliminated by Kingzone DragonX[15] after beating Sandbox Gaming.[16]
In the Summer Split, DAMWON would finish the regular season tied for the best record in the league but would be the second seed heading into playoffs due to Griffin having the better overall game difference. During the regular season, Showmaker would get his first professional Pentakill against Gen.G while playing Camille on June 5, 2019.[17] In the summer playoffs, DAMWON would match up against SKT Telecom T1 who they had previously beaten in KeSPA cup. However, this thime the series would finish 3-0 in favor of SKT.[18]
Following the loss to SKT, DAMWON would compete in the regional finals to gain qualification for the 2019 Season World Championship. They would beat Kingzone DragonX 3-2 in the finals to qualify, making them the first ever team to qualify for worlds the same year they qualified for the LCK.[19]
As the Korean three seed, DAMWON would have to initially compete in the play-in stage of the tournament before qualifying for the main event. They were grouped with Turkish team Royal Youth and Brazilian team Flamengo Esports.[20] DAMWON would finish the group undefeated[21] and then beat Vietnamese team Lowkey Esports 3-1 in the qualifying round to make the worlds Main Event.[22] Throughout the play-ins Showmaker was named Man of the Match in half of DAMWON's group stage games and MVP of their series against Lowkey.
In the main event DAMWON was but in a group with North American team Team Liquid, Taiwanese team ahq eSports Club, and defending world champions, Chinese team Invictus Gaming. DAMWON finished top of the group only losing one game to Team Liquid.[23]
In the knock-out stage, DAMWON were drawn against the European first seed, G2 Esports, who the ultimately were eliminated by 3-1.[24] Throughout the tournament Showmaker impressed with his Akali pick, which he went 26/5/29 on over all games played.[25]
Following their Worlds run, Showmaker and DAMWON would participate in the 2019 KeSPA Cup, where they were eliminated by DRX in the quarter-finals 2-0.[26]
2020[edit]
Heading into the 2020 Spring Split, DAMWON were viewed as one of the best teams in the league and favorites to win it all, as they were the only Korean team to qualify for worlds and retain its roster afterwards. Showmaker was viewed as being apart of the best topside trio in the world alongside top laner Nuguri and jungler Kim "Canyon" Geon-bu.[27] DAMWON would ultimately fall short of expectations and finish the regular season in fifth.[28] In the playoffs, DAMWON would eliminate KT Rolster 2-1[29], before being knocked out by DRX in a close 3-2 series.[30]
Despite a disappointing Spring Split, DAMWON would have a historically good summer split, ending the season on a 10 game win streak.[31] Following DAMWON's success, Showmaker was awarded MVP and was named to LCK's All Pro team.[32] Showmaker was also awarded young player and had the best K/D/A in the league at 16.[33] In the Summer Playoffs, DAMWON defeated DRX in the finals 3-0 to secure their spot as Korea's number one seed heading into the 2020 Season World Championship.[34]
At the World Championship, DAMWON were placed in a group alongside Chinese team JD Gaming, European team Rouge, and Hong Kong team PSG Talon.[35] DAMWON would once again go 5-1 in their group, losing their sole game to JD Gaming after already securing the top spot in the group.[36] In the knock outs DAMWON were drawn against DRX for a rematch of the LCK finals in the first round. DAMWON would once again beat DRX 3-0 to move on to the semifinals.[37] In the semifinals DAMWON would face the team that eliminated them last year, G2 Esports. This year DAMWON defeated G2 3-1, with game 4 being the fastest in the history of the World Championship as DAMWON beat G2 in 19 minutes and 3 seconds.[38] After the series, Showmaker joined his teammates in mimicking G2's celebration from their victory over Gen.G in the quarter-finals.[39] DAMWON gaming became the first LCK team to make a worlds finals in three years and would take on underdogs Suning in the World Final.[40] Showmaker's most notable picks during the tournament were Twisted Fate and Syndra, getting 5 wins without defeat on both champions. He would later choose Twisted Fate as the champion he would get a World Championship skin for.[4]
Showmaker and DAMWON would continue their dominance, winning KeSPA Cup 2020, even after losing top laner Nuguri and replacing him with Kim "Khan" Dong-ha.[41]
2021[edit]
In January 2021, DAMWON Gaming was rebranded as DWG KIA after a sponsor ship from Kia Motors.[42] Moving into the Spring Season, DWG KIA were once again favorites to win it all[43], this time they were able to deliver on expectations though. For the second split in a row they finished with a record of 16-2 and the top team moving into playoffs.[44] Showmaker was joint top in player of the game standings along with DRX's jungler Pyosik and Hanwha Life Esports' mid laner Chovy.[45] Showmaker was also named to the All Pro team for a second straight split.[46] In playoffs, DWG KIA defeated Hanwha Life and Gen.G to be Spring Split champions, their fourth title in a row, and to qualify for the Mid-Season Invitational.[47] Throughout playoffs, Showmaker had a collective KDA of 29/9/40 and was named man of the match for the final game against Hanwha Life.
At MSI DWG KIA was drawn into a group with North American team Cloud9, Costa Rican team Infinity Esports, and Japanese team DetenatioN FocusMe.
