Shriram Life Insurance Company Limited (SLIC) is an Indian life insurance company headquartered in Hyderabad, Telangana. The company offers individual and group life insurance services and was incorporated in 2005 as a joint venture between the Shriram Group, an Indian financial services conglomerate, and Sanlam, a South African financial services group.[2] The company commenced insurance operations in 2006 following registration with the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) under registration number 128.[3]
History
The Shriram Group was founded on 5 April 1974 by R. Thyagarajan, AVS Raja, and T. Jayaraman, beginning operations in the chit fund business before expanding into lending and insurance.[4] In 2005, Shriram Group partnered with Sanlam, a South African financial services group established in 1918, to form Shriram Life Insurance Company as a joint venture.[5] The company received its certificate of registration from IRDAI and commenced insurance operations in 2006, focusing on serving low-income households in rural and semi-urban markets where life insurance penetration was historically low.[2][6]
In 2016, the company received the Bizz Americas Award for business excellence.[5]
In 2023, IRDAI appointed Shriram Life Insurance as the lead life insurer for the state of Telangana, with a mandate to improve insurance penetration in underpenetrated regions of the state.[7] For the financial year ending March 2024, total new business premium grew 62% to ₹1,871 crore, making it one of the fastest-growing private life insurers in India that year.[8] For FY2025, individual new business premium grew 46.3% year-on-year to ₹1,372 crore, outpacing the private industry growth rate of 15%, with total premium reaching ₹4,216 crore and AUM at ₹13,207 crore.[1] The company targets a three-fold increase in its AUM by 2030, projecting a 20% compound annual growth rate (CAGR).[9]
