Shuang Wen Academy Network (SWAN, simplified Chinese: 双文教育系统; traditional Chinese: 雙文教育系統; pinyin: Huāng Wén Jiào Yù Xi Tǒng) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization serving students in multiple schools in New York City with a focus on bilingual Mandarin Chinese immersion. The nonprofit has served 6,000 students[1] over 20 years[2], and currently operates from 5 locations in Manhattan: PS11, PS124, NEST+m[3], True Light Lutheran Church, and 90 Bowery.[4]
History[edit]
Shuang Wen Academy Network started in New York City's Chinatown as an independent non-profit at the same time as the establishment of the PS184M Shuang Wen School at 80 Montgomery Street / 327 Cherry Street in 1998[5], where it ran the after-school program at the public school. It served over 500 students per year in kindergarten through eighth grade. In conjunction with the public school, SWAN earned a Federal Blue Ribbon Award in 2008[6], demonstrating program excellence as assessed by the No Child Left Behind Act. The nonprofit left the PS184M location in 2016.[7]
Programs[edit]
After-school and Summer Programs[edit]
The after-school and summer programs began as a service for students in public school. It started serving only students in PS184M until 2016, at which point partnerships have expanded to PS11, PS124, and NEST+m. Activities include chess, karate, and ballet[8], as well as math, English, Chinese, dance, singing, and cultural performance.[9][10]
Preschool[edit]
Shuang Wen Academy Network moved its location away from 80 Montgomery Street and started a private preschool at 90 Bowery on August 29, 2016 with classes for 2 year-old and 3 year-old students.[7] The preschool operates under the name SWAN Chinese-American International School (T: 展望中美國際學校, S: 展望中美国际学校, Zhǎn Wàng Zhōng Měi Guó Jì Xué Xiào).[1]
Exchange Programs[edit]
Shuang Wen Academy Network also hosts exchange programs to Taiwan.[11][12]
Bilingual Chinese Curriculum[edit]
The Chinese language curriculum focuses on both traditional and simplified Chinese characters.[13]
Competitions and Student Publications[edit]
The organization competes in calligraphy contests[14] and regional cultural events[15][16][17][18] with the Association of Chinese Schools[19], and students publish essays in local newspapers.[20][21]
