Shuster + Moseley are a British artist duo based in London, who create installations and sculptural works in light and glass, drawing on philosophical ideas about light.[1] Formed in 2014 by Claudia Moseley (born 1984) and Edward Shuster (born 1986), their practice builds on the traditions of Light and Space, light art, and installation art.[2] They explore the phenomenological, spatial, and metaphysical dimensions of light through suspended sculpture and site-specific art.[3]

Artistic Practice and Career

Shuster and Moseley began collaborating in 2007 after meeting on a tree-dwelling protest site in the Brecon Beacons.[4] Their early work was inspired by Shuster’s background in philosophy and Claudia’s early art practice at Goldsmiths College, which reflected on her family heritage in the British film industry.[3] Their practice has been described as focusing on light as both medium and subject, examining its relationship to consciousness and technology.[5]

Their installations use optical glass and hand-blown lenses to manipulate light through refraction and reflection, often integrated into architectural or outdoor sites.[4] They have collaborated with scientists and engineers in fields including spectroscopy and cosmology,[6] such as the Institute for Computational Cosmology.[7] Referencing contemplative traditions, their work often creates meditative environments that explore the dynamics of attention within technologically mediated perception.[3]

In 2023 the artists were invited by Edward Enninful to appear in British Vogue "Forces for Change" film series, featuring a short film of their studio practice and the making of their ‘Light-Mobiles’.[8] Light-Mobiles (2015–ongoing) are a series of suspended glass sculptures exploring the interaction of light and space.[4][9]

Early coverage of the duo highlighted their cosmological approach to light-based installations.[10] Their large-scale site-specific works include What Matters (The Scattering) (2017), commissioned for Lumiere Durham, which was described as mapping the cosmic microwave background radiation in St Oswald's Church, Durham.[7][11] Horizon of Day and Night (2020) comprised nine prismatic glass monoliths installed in the UNESCO World Heritage site of Mada’in Salih, AlUla, Saudi Arabia, drawing on megalithic stone circle surveying and computational modelling.[2][12]

Plan of the Path of Light (In the House of the Hidden Places) (2021) was an installation of four large geometric glass sculptures presented as part of Forever Is Now, the first exhibition of contemporary art on the Giza Plateau, organised under the patronage of UNESCO.[13] The work incorporated geometrical ratios derived from studies of the Great Pyramid of Giza.[14] The installation was covered in international and regional media, including ELLE Decor Italia, The Telegraph Luxury, Artnet News, El Tiempo, Daily Architecture News, and Daily News Egypt.[15][16][17][18][19][20]

Background

Claudia Moseley studied Fine art and Textiles at Goldsmiths College and holds an MA in Environmental Anthropology from the University of Kent. Edward Shuster holds an MA in Western Esotericism from the University of Exeter and a PhD in philosophy from the European Graduate School.[21] In 2019, Moseley was featured in Bucherer’s global “BLUE” campaign.[22][23] They are members of the Royal Society of Sculptors.[24]
