Sicilian Action Movement (Italian: Movimento Siciliano d'Azione; Sicilian: Movimentu Sicilianu d'Aziuni; MSA) is a Sicilian nationalist and pro-independence political party. The party was founded in 2021 in order to revive the island's right to self-government.[1]

History

The Sicilian Action Movement was founded on November 13, 2021, during a meeting in Pergusa.

The Sicilian Action Movement took part in the local elections for the first time in September 2022, providing candidates and supporting autonomist politician Cateno De Luca. During his electoral campaign, the Sicilian Action Movement focused on the issues of the violations of the Statute of Sicily by the Italian Government and of the necessity to focus more on Sicilian problems.

Ideology

The Sicilian Action Movement believes that Sicily is a European stateless nation with its own political history, language, culture, traditions and national identity.[2] The party describes the current political and economic condition of Sicily as a case of internal colonialism. In particular, the Sicilian Action Movement complains about the persistent non-implementation of the Autonomous Statute of Sicily and, for this reason, aims to gradually achieve the full independence of the island in order to create a sovereign state. The party is also favourable to an integration of Sicily in the European Union. MSA describes itself as concerned about the whole Sicilian archipelago, including Malta because of the historical closeness due to the Kingdom of Sicily.

Leadership

  • President: Giovanni Montedoro (2021– present)
  • Secretary: Mirko Stefio (2021–present)
