The Siege of Panniyankara or Siege of Polanad took place in medieval Kerala between the Zamorin (Samutiri) of Eranad and the Poralatiri of Polanad. Zamorin's troops successfully besieged the fortress at the capital of Polanad.[1][2]

The Siege[edit]

The Zamorin went to the Polanad's capital Panniyankara with his troops and started besieging the fortress of Poralatiri. The Poralaiti's army was larger than that of Zamorin and consisted of 10,000 soldiers. Therefore the siege proved to be long and tedious. Even after 48 years, the Poralatiri remained as strong as ever. So the Zamorin bribed his enemy's troops and offered a governorship with 5000 soldiers to the chief minister of the Poralatiri. Poralatiri's wife also accepted Zamorin's gold and betrayed her husband. The gates of the fortress were opened according to the agreements and the troops of Eranad occupied it. The surprised Poralatiri fled to the protection of Kolatiri of Kolathunadu.[1]

Aftermath[edit]

The treacherous minister and mistress of Poralatiri were rewarded with territory and honours. The former received the rank of Eranad Menon and latter's family received the title 'Talachennor of Calicut'. Sometime afterwards however misunderstandings arose, and half of the Ten Thousand (Vadakkampuram faction) marched to the Zamorin’s palace to oppose the other half of the Ten Thousand (Kizhakkampuram faction). But peaceable councils prevailed, and by timely concessions and liberal allowances, the Zamorin and his ministers finally won over the ten thousand soldiers and their country (Polanad) round Calicut.[2]

The Zamorin then transferred his residence from Eranad to the newly conquered country. He built a fort at Calicut in order to have a firmer hold of Polanad.[2]
