Sifted (est. in 2019) is a UK-based news website reporting on technology and startups in Europe. It is backed by the Financial Times. As of January 2022, it ranked 37,993 in the list of most visited global websites according to Alexa Internet.[3]

History[edit]

Sifted was co-founded by Caspar Woolley, a serial entrepreneur and former cofounder of Hailo, and the Financial Times Innovation Editor John Thornhill, in January 2019.[1][4] It was backed by the Financial Times, which held a 25% stake in the new venture.[1] FT also signed a licensing agreement with Sifted to ensure it meets the standard of FT news reporting.[1]

By February 2021, the website had 11 journalists, reporting from London, Paris, Stockholm, Barcelona, Bucharest and Berlin.[5] In February, Sifted launched a membership subscription model, making roughly a quarter of its content available only to subscribers.[6] In November 2021, it raised £4m from ScaleUp Capital to expand its operations and to focus on new data products.[7] As the result of the deal, the FT’s shareholding stake was diluted from 25% to 14%.[2] By the end of 2021, the website had 42 staff including 15 journalists.[2]

Business coverage[edit]

Sifted reports on the number of startups in Europe and their funding,[8][9] gender diversity among startup founders,[10] military technology,[11] publishes opinion pieces[12] and exclusive reports on European start-ups (such as Gorillas[13] and N26[14]).
